<div class="IPBDescription">New GC-GBA linkup game!</div> Review in a moment, first a plea to any who already has this game:

I need help!!!! My friends and I have reached the Eastern Temple (Stage 6) in multiplayer mode. There is a room in the temple with a ghost and a Dark World portal, and across the bottom of the room are rolling a huge quantity of steel balls preventing you from reaching the far side.

The problem? You get a Moon Pearl and bring it to the portal, but the portal it creates is "color coded"! Only the Link who is the same color as the portal can pass through. He can bring other Links behind him (e.g. if you are playing with two players, each controls two Links - you can bring your second Link through with you), but he cannot pick up another Link and carry him through the portal.

What this means is that there's no way to get all four players to the Dark World and across the room to where there are 4 switches that need to be pressed. Walkthroughs I've read so far simply say "go through the portal" -- I have to assume they're single-player walkthroughs and didn't run into the glitch that we have. Even the official Nintendo walkthrough was no help.

Any clues would be appreciated!

REVIEW!

Ignore the above whining; this game is fantastic. The art style is similar to the SNES <i>A Link To The Past</i>, but with little graphical bits (lighting effects, magic, etc.) that take advantage of GC prettiness. The retro look makes sense, because any time you enter a cave/hole/house/etc., the action moves from the main screen to your GBA. Keeping the GC graphics played down allows the whole game to remain consistant.

You are only allowed to carry a single item in Four Swords. It would make the single-player game frustrating, I imagine, as you'd need to backtrack to get necessary weapons, but it works very well in multiplayer. You'll end a level with each player having a different weapon, and work together to solve the various puzzles. There are blocks too big for one Link to move, levers that require more than one Link to pull simultaneously, 4-person-sized switches and more to keep you working together through the levels. Sometimes you'll have to have a friend toss you across a chasm, or pick you up and jump across (since he has the Roc's feather and you don't). All in all, there is an emphasis on puzzle-style Zelda gameplay as well as some friendly competition to gather the most "Force Gems" in a given level - a great multiplayer game.

It seems (I haven't gotten very far) that each area consists of three stages, the third of which is a dungeon with a boss. After defeating the second stage, Tingle's Tower will appear and you can enter it to play a purely competitive mini-game. The first game is a horse race where you try to finish first while nabbing the most gems. In the second, you have to capture 20 Cuccos (chickens) in a pen; the player who catches the most wins. They're a fun break -- it was especially fun to try and grab the last cucco from my roommate - I would hit him to make him lose his grip on it, then throw him out of the way and try to get the bird myself, at which point he'd do the same back to me. ^^ Tons of fun.

All in all, a very fun multiplayer experience. It's lighter-spirited than Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, so it's easier to just sit down and play a level (especially since FF:CC can get pretty difficult, and some of the levels are LONG). I love FF:CC for being an engrossing, beautiful, and different foray into the Final Fantasy series. I love Four Swords for its adherence to its Zelda roots (gameplay, presentation, and all) and its branching into a new and very enjoyable multiplayer experience.

<b>Side note regarding FSA's storyline.</b>
The manual has an introductory story to Four Swords, and a similar segment is played when you begin the game. The manual says this:
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Long ago in the inner reaches of Hyrule, an evil wind sorcerer known as Vaati began kidapping beautiful young maidens, one after another.

Nobody could stop Vaati, and the people of Hyrule despaired.  Then, a brave young wanderer carrying only a single sword appeared.

When the young lad took out his sword, he split into four separate beings.  THe legends say that these four beings worked as one and defeated Vaati.

The wanderer, united once again, imprisoned Vaati deep in Hyrule and sealed the prison with his own sword.  This place became known as the Realm of the Four Sword.

After that, a long time passed.

Then, the wind sorcerer Vaati broke out of his prison and then snatched Princess Zelda of Hyrule.

Zelda's childhood friend, a young boy named Link, claimed the strange power of the Four Sword and fought Vaati fiercely.  In the end, he succeeded in sealing Vaati away once again.

And so, peace was restored to Hyrule once again.

Or so everyone thought...<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
The game's text (which I don't have immediate access to) also adds that the Four Sword had the power to repel evil, and that Vaati stole 7 maidens in his first attempted conquest of Hyrule. Does this sound familiar to anyone else? Seven maidens... sword of evil's bane... Sounds a lot like <i>A Link to the Past</i> and the Master Sword to me! And if so, Vaati's second appearance could well have been the original Legend of Zelda.

The difference, of course, is the Four Sword in place of the Master Sword. But isn't Zelda a legend? Legends have a tendency to change over time through the tellings... so maybe someone heard the story of the Hero a little differently. Maybe that teller heard that the Hero fought as bravely as four ordinary men... and the story became that the Hero *was* fourfold, split by the magic of the sword. And thus the story was passed down like that.

Anyway, that's my opinion on the matter. Pretty interesting, eh? Well, *I* got all warm and fuzzy. ^^

    Here's a Speed Run of the game:
    <a href='http://planetquake.com/sda/other/4SwordsAdv.html' target='_blank'>http://planetquake.com/sda/other/4SwordsAdv.html</a>

    Maybe that'll help you where you're stuck. There's also GameFAQs: www.gamefaqs.com

    I'd get this game, but to play it you need a GBA/Link Cable, I'm not going to fall for Nintendo's Connectivity Scams, which they sadly did with Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life. The game looks really fun, but I don't have the money to play it. Neither do any of the friends that'd play it with me. If you have the stuff, play it.

    Well I've already made my mind up to buy the game, as I have 3 other, extremely willing players. All I'm worried about now is how I can get it cheaper than $50, without ending up waiting a year. I suppose I probably can't, but one can only hope.

    You know, I've never thought about the Zelda chronology like that. It just makes sense though. In one of those "oh yeah.. why didn't I realize that before" sorts of ways.

    Mind opening.

    Oh and one more thing:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->And if so, Vaati's second appearance could well have been the original Legend of Zelda.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    A Link To The Past takes places *BEFORE* the original Legend of Zelda.

    The timeline is something like this:

    Ocarina->Majora's Mask -> (dozens/hundreds of years of nothing) -> Link To The Past -> Link's Awakening -> (dozens/hundreds of years of nothing) -> Zelda 1 -> Zelda 2

    Wind Waker's position in all this is iffy. Supposedly its after Majora's Mask, but the whole flooding of Hyrule thing makes it seem that it would come at the very end. (Not to mention the advances in technology, such as cameras and also the evolution of several of the franchises creatures)

    Not sure if you're agreeing with me or correcting me, but that's basically what I said. Vaati's first appearance was to grab the 7 maidens (Agahnim in LttP). His second was to nab Zelda herself (LoZ). At least, that's my thought.

    Liku: Thanks for the link to the speed run, but it won't help - it's a single-player run-through, which avoids the snag I've hit. I need a multiplayer solution.

    I prefer to think of there being three seperate "universes" where the Zelda games take place, One with Zelda 1, 2, link to the past and link's awakening, one with Ocarina of time and Majora's Mask (and probably the next Zelda game), and one with Wind Waker.

    Although that may be because it's just easier for my mind to comprehend that way. Where abouts does four swords take place?

    Wind Waker had a camera, as did Majora's Mask. I wouldn't call it "advanced" technology.

    Man, it seems whenever I sell something Nintendo is putting out, they FINALLY make something good for it.

    Damn you.
