Overclocking

my 9800pro
i recently got a HIS radeon 9800 pro iceq which i personally think was well worth $240. i definitely plan on pushing it to the limits with overclocking, as well as flashing it to 9800xt BIOS. but im a bit concerned...will overclocking/flashing (assuming i do them correctly) limit the overall lifespan of my graphics card? and if so, by how much do you think?

thanks.

every time you make a component run faster its lifetime will inevitably be shortened. that's just how it is. run your car faster, wears out faster. overclock, board dies sooner.

flashing the bios, i doubt you'll ever get to the point where it dies on you, unless you plan to use the card 4 years.

depending on how much you overclock it could die within a year. but really, do you need to overclock a 9800XT?

iirc video cards die pretty quickly when overclocked

Yeah, you have a pretty damn good Vid card - you probably have no need to overclock it.

I'd recommend NOT doing it... the XT has an auto-overclocking feature, and heat sensors on the card to prevent it from going thermonuclear. This is problematic, as the 9800 Pro does not have the heat sensors. :b

Manual overclocking is okay, so long as you know how to do it properly.

5% at max. The card runs hot enough as it is.
