Evangelion was pretty crap. It was less than average, then the part I was expecting to be good was even worse. All the chars became utter crap, whiney, angsty teenagers, or even worse, adults of the same type. Religious symbolism and references do not save a series, let alone a series as abysmal as Evangelion.

    Aye, Rock Lee for ever!

Heck, what I didn't notice is that for the past 10 years, I've had the same hair as him....and I can pull off flying kicks in the same manner he does. Even my friend calls me Lee for it. w00t, time to get some leg weights

Just kidding. There's a line between liking it and being crazily obsessed with it....

Of course, I do manage to scribble the Konoha symbol every once in a while on my desk, and looks pretty good on it too. Too bad the janitors end up rubbing it off....

BTW, as for the naruto-ish relation....let's say my friend looks like Kakashi (he gels his hair almost like it, except Kakashi's doesn't go forward, rather to the left) and I'm Lee.

w00t time to make some sprites.

Yeah EVA has a lot to answer for, seeing as it for a while constituted people's first look at anime. So many people I've spoken to who dislike anime say "Oh yeah I watched Akira and Evangelion and they sucked". There are much, much better animes than EVA out there, and I'm just glad that at uni I was able to find them.

I'm patiently waiting for Sakura to die a horrible, horrible death. It hasn't happened yet in the manga, but it's only a matter of time, surely?

On another note - Konoha needs more counselor-nins. It strikes me that all of the kids have serious problems. :/

I know. We all hate her (ok not all, but we still hate her)

But unfortunately, most of the time the important characters live till the end....it's likely that....

    ***POSSIBLE SPOILER-SPECULATION***
...Sasuke will escape from Konoha and be put under tutelage by Orochimaru, to defeat Itachi. Sakura and Nruto will likewise be trained by Tsunade and Jiraiya respectively. Would make sense though. However....there's the possibility that it won't happen.

Other than that, my guess is that we're stuck until chapter 216 arrives. Until then, I'm on my seat patiently....wait, that's the wrong word. Impatiently waiting for #84.

As for counselor-nins.....they really won't be needed as the Jounins are already there, working with their students on every mission, every day. But of course, there are a few issues that cannot be fixed by counselor-nins.

Like Sasuke's case, where his whole family and clan is left destroyed by a certain man (no spoilers here folks!) and mentally damaged by his dojutsu (yes that is the point of the mangekyou) sharingan

Yeah, I guess that will happen to Sakura...I just don't think she deserves it. After her attitude change in the forest, I thought she was going to train really hard after the exams and actually become better. Instead, she just mopes around all the time.

It's not even that she doesn't have a bloodline/special ability. Rock Lee can't use ninjitsu for crap, but he worked hard and now he's awesome. Even those with special powers (Sasuke, Naruto) have had to put their all into their training to get where they are. If what you said is true (I think it will end up like that, too) then Sakura will be handed all this awesome stuff on a silver platter. It doesn't sit right with me.

It doesn't seem like the jounins talk to their students that much. They just train them up, or in the case of Sakura, send her into town. :/

I want to find out more about Kabuto. I find him interesting - he's intelligent, he serves Oro and yet, he still has some regard for life (saving Hinata).

Well, you know, weird stuff really happens in Naruto like that match in the prelims where Naruto was up against Kiba....you get what I mean eh?

As for jounins not talking much....well, the anime mainly focuses on Group #7, Kakashi's Genin group. Now, if we look at the anime in lets say.... Gai's group, then well, there's gonna be heck loads of training for them.

Just depends. We just all know that Kakashi is one lazy guy....and a cheapskate

The interesting thing about Sakura is that she's a main character, but her background hasn't been explored at all. Sasuke's family has been examined, Naruto's lack of family has had mention, but Sakura has like no background. Which makes me think something might come of that.

It could also be that Sakura is there to show that not every ninja has an outstanding ability or technique. I mean, there must be quite a few ninjas just like that, but they don't get much mention.

Btw, anyone else here love Hinata? Broke my heart to watch her being beaten up

    ****SPOILER ALERT******

That said, the fact that Sakura isn't around in the Elite Genin Squad, and indeed not around for the entire "Sasuke-In-A-Barrel" story arc, might be indicative of her becoming a secondary character. She might have originally been around to be a love-spark between her and Naruto and Sasuke, but that does seem a little shallow given the thought that the author has put into other aspects of the series.

Sakura could very well have something hidden that will be shown soon. Take Chouji. When I first saw he was in the Elite Genin Squad, my first thought was pretty much the same as Naruto's: what the heck is this guy doing in there? Then later on, you see Chouji's true strength and he develops as a character. Of course, Sakura has had about 140 odd manga eps to do something similar and hasn't. It remains to be seen what will happen.

    Ok, some other random stuff

What does Temeri summon in #214? A ferret?

What does Gaara's "Desert Requiem" ability do? Did it turn that whole area into sand? Or did it solidify the sand from "Desert Avalanche"?
  • RaVeRaVe Join Date: 2003-06-20 Member: 17538Members
    ***SPOILER POST***

It's most likely that it's a weasel of some sorts. Could be a ferret. I realy don't know though....

As for Desert Requiem, it's generally a giant Desert Graveyard, because their two japanese names are very very similar. Sabaku Sousou and Sabaku Daisou
I guess it works by the sand being suddenly contracted at very high speeds. Somewhat like Desert Graveyard, only on a much more larger scale.

And yes I did feel a little bad when I saw Hinata getting beaten up....oh well, I guess that's Naruto....sometimes it gets sad, sometimes it gets funny, sometimes it gets freaky....

As for Kakashi....well, there's some explaining he needs to do about his old comrade Obito as well....maybe his full name is Uchiha Obito? Beats me....until then, we've got to wait for the Naruto animated movie to find out about it. Heard it has some bits about Kakashi's past in it....ost likely ANBU job.

And \o/ for new avatar and sig. <3

    ****OBLIGATORY SPOILER WARNING*****

We're probably reading differant translations, but when you say "Desert Graveyard" do you mean "Desert Coffin"? The move that crushes a person surrounded by the sand. I watch the ANBU-AnoE eps and read the Inane manga, so it's probably just an alternate translation. I just wanted to check.

Also, there's been considerable speak here at my share-house about what the Primary Lotus actually does to Lee. When Tsunade examines him, she says (in the translation I have) that some of his bones were crushed into powder and the fragments are floating through his blood stream. I believe that was a result of Gaara catching Lee's leg and arm with "Desert Coffin", but my housemates say it was a result of the Primary Lotus. I don't buy that because Lee would have had to have performed the move at least once before, and if the damage was that severe every time there's no way he could have performed it again without undergoing major surgery. Whereas if what the Primary Lotus does is tear your muscles and completely exhast you, you could recover. When Lee performs the Primary Lotus it says his muscles tear, but it says nothing of bones being crushed to powder.

In any case, Lee owns. One of my most favorite anime characters ever.

About Desert Graveyard/Coffin, as I read it, Desert Coffin is where he surrounds the victim with sand, and Desert Graveyard is where he actually crushes them.

Even though I hate Naruto, I can't stop watching it. Just finished Ep. 84, and it was absolute crap, btw. The episode could have been condensed into about 30 seconds of real anime. I'm VERY sick of these flashbacks and people staring at eachother with their eyes twitching saying "What??"(or how/why). This is the meat and potatoes of Naruto, unfortunately.

I'm looking forward to Jiraiya vs Itatchi, but I know that they'll manage to make it extremely lame and drawn out. I think I'll start PlanetES, I heard it was good. Just got the series from an SA ftp

Gaara always looks stupid in a pande suit.

Anyways....somehow I don't think we've read different translations Ryo. I'm reading through all Inane all the time.

But yeah....about Lee getting his arma and leg severely broken, let's look at it this way.

Lee performs the Primary Lotus (bah, I hate english names, why not stick to japanese ones?!) and gets his body severely injured (A well-known fact about the Renge....yes, in I said Lotus in japanese )

Now this will severely incapacitate him, but he will be able to recover just fine. However, Gaara caught onto him with Desert Coffin/Sabaku Kyuu and constricted his movements. This in turn injured the muscles and quite possibly tore off the tendons in his body. This pretty much made him what he is now in the anime. Be reminded that Desert Coffin actually acts like a minor Desert Graveyard, as it crushes, but not totally. Just enough to hold a person into place. Lee also stuggled to get away from the sand but unfortunately, he pulled himself a little too much.

I don't recall anywhere where it said his bones turned to powder though, as his body would become severely weaker (as bones are needed to support the muscles, no matter how strong) and he wouldn't be able to hold any walking canes or walking sticks

anyone's first introduction to anime should probably be through a miyazaki or failing that perhaps trigun XD

I'm no big fan of anime either. Evangelion, Vampire Hunter D - they didn't even amuse me in the slightest. I guess i couldn't really tell you exactly why, but I felt that both were just...inanely stupid.

The only anime (of ther few) that I've ever seen that I actually liked is the Sword of the Berserk.

I guess I just don't have the patience (i.e selective ADD) to watch this crap, myself.

heh dubb, the problem a lot of people have and you've kinda fallen into yourself is they keep saying anime as if it's a genre. Already mentioned in this thread is the fact it's just a medium, like film or TV.
You just need to find the right genres to enjoy it like anything else, you're not exactly gonna enjoy watching romance anime if you don't like romance films for example =3

I didn't like Vampire Hunter D nor Evangelion either if it's any consolation

i didn't originally feel too attached to anime, but i started really getting into it (as in downloading major gigs of fansub) when I started watching the Love Hina stream over winamp tv. (you can watch it too, if the server's not full. get winamp 5!) i fell in love with the series, and in 4 days, watched the entire 28 episodes. i'm still getting over a major crush on narusegawa . i think i'll go with evangalion next - but not until summer comes along. i'm never gonna pass another class with anime and quake 3 in my schedule D:.

Check out ep 173 of the manga. I quote Tsunade from the copy I have:

"There are numerous bone fragments lodged within vital parts of your neural network"

And in episode 50 of the anime (ANBU AnoE translation) the doctor examining Lee's body after the fight with Gaara says:

"He is breathing, but the bones in his entire body have suffered communuted fractures, and his muscles have been torn up"

I had to grab a dictionary to find out just want comminuted fractures meant, and I got:

    com·mi·nute ( P ) Pronunciation Key (km-nt, -nyt)
    tr.v. com·mi·nut·ed, com·mi·nut·ing, com·mi·nutes

    To reduce to powder; pulverize.

    comminuted

Comminute \Com"mi*nute\, v. t. [imp. & p. p. Comminuted; p. pr. & vb. n. Comminuting.] [L. comminutus, p. p. of comminuere to comminute; com- + minuere to lessen. See Minute.] To reduce to minute particles, or to a fine powder; to pulverize; to triturate; to grind; as, to comminute chalk or bones; to comminute food with the teeth. --Pennant.

In ep 87 of the manga, the medical team says:

"He is breathing properly, but he has shattered bones and torn muscles throughout his entire body"

Now this could all just be differances in translation, but I'm inclined to think that it was Gaara's attack, not the Renge, that damaged his bones to the extent that they are. The Renge could very well break some of your bones, but broken bones mend in time. Bones crushed to powder don't. We've got to remember that Lee must have performed this move at least once before, so it can't hurt his body too badly.

I prefer the Japanese names as well truth be told, but I can't remember them as easily.
