A Little Windows Program I'm Tinkering With.

<div class="IPBDescription">I call it "Knowledge Tray"</div> I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I find myself visiting Google and Dictionary.com at least like 20 times a day. So to speed up my searches a little bit, I coded up this little guy that sits in your system tray.

<a href='http://them.clanwho.com/downloads/KnowledgeTray.zip' target='_blank'>Knowledge Tray Download</a>

What it does is sit in your tray, and when you double click the icon, it brings up a small window with an edit box, a button for google, and a button for dictionary.com. When you click one of the search button, it auto-clears the edit box, minimizes itself back to the tray, and opens the appropriate web page's findings.

I'm still trying to figure out how to open a new window for each search instead of commandeering an open browser window. But it's still speedy nonetheless.

Have fun, suggestions should be directed to me, complaints should be directed to your nearest brick wall.

I use opera half the time, I have the little toolbar in there. I also use IE, and I have the google toolbar for that. This is just an abstraction that doesn't require any browser to be open first.

Well it still basically requirs the same amount of steps, doesn't it? 1)click icon 2)type what you wanna look up 3)press enter
  • [WHO]Them[WHO]Them You can call me Dave Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10593Members, Constellation
pretty much, it's still faster for me to do it this way than to open opera or IE first.

If you don't like it then go suck a rock and stop posting to my thread.

    Neat!

I have a feature request if you don't mind. ;)

Make it so you can put in a keyword and it automatically goes to that page coorelating with a link on the <a href='http://www.php.net/quickref.php' target='_blank'>PHP Quick Reference</a> manual. For example, if I put in "mysql_query" and click the PHP (or whatever) button, it'll go <a href='http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.mysql-query.php' target='_blank'>here</a>. It shouldn't be too hard to figure out php.net's naming scheme since you figured out Google's and Dictionary.com's :P

That PHP idea was kind of nice. I'd like something like that for C/SDL. Though I'd make the suggestion that things like that should be kept out since most people will never use them. It'd be cool if you could just tack on features like that in a modular fasion though.
  • [WHO]Them[WHO]Them You can call me Dave Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10593Members, Constellation
I've been thinking about making it more configurable. But seeing as how this is only for like 9 people, it doesn't quite matter yet.

I'm going to focus on getting it to open in new windows.

    for me its
    1) select the word
    2) right click
    3) choose apropriate action

however i wouldn't mind having it 'listen for my keys' when firefox is open, then do a spellcheck of each word, if it is not correct, popup a baloon saying "change x to y?", and clicking on the baloon would change the word.

I came across a bit of luck and found a neat little hack that lets me open up the search results in a new window. So, the newest version which is up right now *should* always open up search results in a new window as long as you keep the two html files in the same directory as the executable.

[WHO]Them I was wonder if the config files were in xml , we could edit the links.
Even being a task button it still takes the same amount of steps, perhaps a key binding is in need here?

Heres an idea, might be a bit much, but for dictionary searches, if you could run a program like <a href='http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/wgetwin.html' target='_blank'>wget</a> to grab the html file for the word you're searching, if its an exact match, don't bother opening up a browser at all, just parse out the definition(s) from the html file and display it directly in your program.

P.S. Good work, I love small software. Its what makes the world go round.

It is at this point I would like to show the wonderful input boxes on my desktop, that bring me straight to the search results for google, google images and dictionary.com. I simnply type in the word and press Enter, and bingo.

One slight problem I have is getting the search results to open in a new window, rather than the one they opened in last time...
