Screens!
For those who care, Doom 3 is coming to X-Box now. And holy crap, new screenshots, this time in-game!! So they ARE making a game with the engine, after all!

Go to Gamespy's collection and look at them.

EDIT: Gamespot also has some.

I don't think this is news, if I remember correctly, there was word that the X-Box version will have Co-op, and not the PC.

making the xbox have coop and the PC not is stupid, thats just a lame way to promote sells for the xbox version.

I hope they make Coop available over LAN, at least, for PC.

Man... those shots hurt. Well, this one specifically. Why? Look at the texturing on both the model and the wall... there's no evidence of bumpmapping or other high-tech DX9 texturing goodies. Makes me worry that the Xbox can't push the graphics fast enough for full detail.

Anyway, I recently saw the E3 2003 demo and I have to say it quite intrigued me. I'm eager to see what they have for 2004. Maybe I'll upgrade for this one... lord knows I'm due.

Don't worry, if coop isn't included someone will mod it in.

Yeah, it wont take long to mod co-op.

Don't you also wish the co-op mod for AvP2 was better?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was rather underwhelmed by these shots. The PC shots had a sense of horror and an air of panic-ridden gunplay, while these have the air of a bland run-of-the-mill shooter.

I am worried they will pull a DX2 on Doom3 and make it focused for an XBox release - while leaving PC users out in the cold.

There's almost no chance that's gonna happen, I wouldn't worry.

This screen seems to have bumpmapping in it (look at the green-lit surface).

What do you expect from a mid-low end PC? Much less with an nVidia chip? Beauty? Ha.

Doom3 will be cut-down to fit... honestly, most of the 'bump mapping' in one or two of those pictures looked more like baked textures than actual EMBM. The rest didn't even have that much. It's the same thing that happened with HALO... it was crapped up so the box could handle it. Most of the neat stuff they'd had planned could not be viable on the box, so they cut it and simplified.

I'd not believe the no-coop-on-PC rumor just yet, as D3 was stated to have at least 4-player network gaming quite a while back.... and four players ain't much, if you're going for a deathmatch. Gotta be co-op.

I'm just worried for the future, as the XBox-2 is supposedly carrying a custom ATi chip. This'll place my loyalties at risk, given that the Box *might* actually be capable of making pretty pictures, rather than cut-rate crap.

Ahh so I see Talesin is not an Xbox fan.

As for Doom 3, one can only hope they don't pull a stunt like that with the PC version.

Most likely being the only one here who has legally played DOOM III, I can testify that it is OMG beautiful. Still shots do not do it justice, you have to see it in motion.

One thing to point out while its on my mind though, look at the shadows. They are *NOT* all solid black like some people have been whining about, they are properly shaded. So bleh. :P

And from what I saw of the E3 demo at Quakecon 2 years ago, we will definately be in for a treat single player wise. The storyline may not be Shakespere, but I'm confident its going to be the scariest damned game ever.

it doesn't matter what the console can do as most tv's still only do 800x600 (which is pure utter crap).

unless MS do an apple and stick a screen on that thing it aint gonna be worth buying.

    v91, not so.

True, TVs will only realistically show about 800x600 (720x240 IIRC, actually due to the shape of the element-pixels), unless you go for an HDTV which can run in 1080i mode. Or just hook up a VGA adapter to it.

Even then though, a more powerful video chip is a good thing. It's not overpowered... it has the power to burn for ANTIALIASING. And ATi actually does it well, compared to.. you know. nVidia craptastic AA. Anisotropic filtering, too. And pixel shader effects!
It isn't that you'll be running the game at a higher resolution, it's that you can make it look a LOT FREAKING PRETTIER, especially on an analog TV. Get rid of the jaggies entirely. No more blurry textures in the distance.
You'll be able to handle more action at once with no slowdown, more detail on screen, etc.

However, due to the fact that Doom3 essentially only needs DirectX 7, using stencil buffers for their real-time shadows..
