Problems With Latest Nvidia Drivers

<div class="IPBDescription">Can't seem to disable vsync...</div> 'Lo all. This morning I installed the latest Nvidia driver package, 56.72, and since then I find myself unable to play NS at greater than 60fps. Vertical sync seems to be stuck on, and I cannot disable it via the desktop menu's setting for my video card like I used to be able to--they have changed the GUI and it no longer has any option to remove vertical sync. The closest thing I found was an option to change refresh rates at various resolutions, or leave them to application's control, but any changes I make to that option get undone no matter what I click (okay, cancel, apply, etc)

My video card is a GeForce 4 MX 440 (onboard with my MSI nforce motherboard) and my monitor is a Philips 150MT flatscreen running at 1024x768x32b @ 75hz.

If it matters, I run Windows XP Pro and my CPU is an AXP2800+.

I tried rolling back to 56.64, but doing so did not revert me to the old display menu which allowed me to disable vsync. Any help you guys can offer me would be greatly appreciated as the game is noticeably less easy to play at 60fps.

Please don't reply unless you have useful information for me, btw. Thanks.

vsync is not stuck on: your refreshrate was reset. use refreshforce (google: <a href='http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/)' target='_blank'>http://www.pagehosting.co.uk/rf/)</a> to move it up.

cwag: thanks for telling us exactly where we can find it and what exactly it is.

why why why in the world why would you need some use some wierd 3rd rate refresh rate fixing programs when nvidia does it right in the driver?! i cant comment on the vsync problem- but the reason anyone would ever want choppy play just for a few more fps is beyond me. Check out this screenshot of my drivers, it allows you to force refresh rates right in the driver.

I don't really know what vsync is, but I noticed I had problems with the 56.72 drivers myself. Not just in HL either; I was getting really weird performance drops for the longest time, and this one time I was playing Diablo II, it crashed. First time I've ever had a blue screen on XP Pro besides the time Uplink was giving my crappy onboard sound a bunch of grief. I had to rollback, and ever since I have, my problems are pretty much gone.

PS: Holy crap! I just noticed Eric has the Fruit Fscker wallpaper! Rock on!

Just a little note here, because some people might not know about VSync and its effects:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->If you disable Vsync then your graphics card will continuously render without waiting for the last frame to be displayed in its entirety. With fast graphics cards this means that your monitor may switch to a new frame halfway down the screen. This effect is known as tearing as there appears to be a visible line separating two different halves. Due to this, you should generally leave Vsync enabled except when benchmarking.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    It'll limit it to your monitor refresh rate, but can you honestly say there's a visible difference between 60fps and 120fps? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

There is a visible difference with 75 and 85 fps I have noticed, as 85Hz is my default refresh rate. You should set your max_fps to your refresh rate for best results. If you make it more, the game may look as though it lags.

My monitor refreshes at 75fps, i tried playing NS at 60, 75, and 100 fps to see the differences, and I found that the "tearing" problem was not noticeable (I have an LCD, vertical refresh tearing isn't as much of a problem because the screen is not drawn in lines from top to bottom like it is on an LCD) while I don't deny that I'm probably not getting any awesome benefits by going 25 fps over my refresh rate, I did feel the game played much better anyway. Perhaps it's because when I am whipping my mouse around I am more likely to be seeing "current" information in the frame i'm viewing. At 60FPS I cannot track a skulk as I spin my mouse around.

Thanks for the link, cwag, I will try verthandi's method first and if it fails I'll give those drivers a look.

refreshforce automatically scans for your monitor's fastest refresh rate, and he said it wasn't working.

also, there is a small performance difference between 60 and 100 fps, but this does allow for smoother and faster mouse responses.

Ive noticed a huge decrease in fps and performance with the new drivers as well (gf fx 5600). These drivers struggle on normal HL, and on such a high gfx card... ANGER!

A newer set of drivers is available, but not yet certified. Version 60.72

They seem to give a very great boost in game performance, and might solve your problems, I'll try them myself, and tell you if I find any problems.

For more information look at this site <a href='http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=774' target='_blank'>http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=774</a>

EDIT: I just realised that these drivers was probably what CWAG was refering to <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

yeah TyrNem - just reinstall the previous drivers that worked fine for you, uninstall them reboot, install the old drivers and reboot once more and it should work. if it doesnt look for a program on google called "detonator destoryer" or something like that -

    007Bistromath: yeah - penny arcade owns ^
