well how should i come about dealing with this, I wanted a dedicated server
maybe this would help, comp specs

    900mhz
    cable
    512 ram
donno bandwith (near 1500 i think)
30gig hard drive (about 5 left)
    8mb graphics card (Nivida)

    that should be all
if these are not enough to meet requirements please tell me, if they are then how do i solve this problem.

use the steam tools to create an account. after you successfully log in to ur new account, you can start updating it.

Neo, if you actually read the post you'd see that is exactly what he's trying to do.

I've seen this problem only in Linux based systems where a previous installation of steam was wiped out to start over from scratch. Not sure if this is the case for you, but I'd try re-downloading the hlds tool and make sure you wipe out any previous installations before starting again. Hopefully you aren't running steam client in the background, if you are shut it down before creating an account with the hldsupdatetool.

That's all I can really think of.

ok, now im scared, I play ns alrite
    I have windows ME
and i wanted to set up a dedicated server
in my opinion i think a dedicated server is when i set it all up i get a server people can join that will be listed in the servers page on steam.

I also want to still be able to play steam
    is this possible?

(ps) and no, i was trying to set up my account via dos
but now i will try thorugh the other way, thanks

will this still be able to let me play ns?

I do not recommend setting up a dedicated server on Windows ME, especially if you plan on playing on the machine. The operating system is not optimal for a dedicated server, you should really host a server on something like Windows 2000/2003 or Linux.

I would keep your current computer as a client only and convert another machine to a dedicated server.

Tell me what you want and I, or someone else here, will give you a suggestion on hardware. There are too many variables for me to just flat out tell you what you need.
