<div class="IPBDescription">NS takes lot of bandwidth</div> A few times, I have been on servers with bandwidth restricted at stupid rates like 4000, and those are the laggiest servers ever. NS is very intense and requires a lot of bandwidth so please do not set maximum rates on your server.

Have a look at how much bandwidth I was using on a server about an hour ago.
<a href='http://myfiles.dyndns.org/pictures/ns_bandwidth.jpg' target='_blank'>screenshot</a>

Look at the bottom right corner. Look at that rate. 9.28kB/s download and 2.31KB/s upload. Even with that much bandwidth use, there is still 12 choke.

Please do not set rate limits <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

This is a bad place to post to server admins. THis belongs in General Server Support....yep yep yep....

some people are paranoid about what other people set their rates to. apparently, high rates are "rate h4x." that might explain it

What is this... rate h4x? Is it anything like teamwork h4x? Or motion h4xing?

You know what's the saddest part of this all?

The site that rediculously huge image is hosted at has trottled bandwidth down in the area of 10 kb/s... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Try to see it from our POV though....

Some of us have either a low bandwidth cap, or a LOT of servers to look after. If that NS server starts hogging it, and for the enjoyment of 14 NS players you see 60 players of other games suffer, you're doing something wrong as an admin if you don't act against it.

Thankfully, I'm not in this boat, but some of us are, and I feel sympathy for the abuse they get just trying to keep everything A-1.

    What map is that?

This rates are just normal and don't result in choke anyway - Maybe you should pick your servers more wisely :-)

I think shockwave makes a point, and most server operators know there networks, and the specs of there machines can vary, there can be limits and caps etc, no one is forcing you to play on there server, you can always just find another one if you think the one your on is laggy

lol, as a 56k i use what? 4k down 2k up and i get 0 choke 0 loss all the time and hes complaining about having 10k of bandwidth i would kill for that much.

Also you have to see if from the point of the server admins more bandwidth costs more £££ not everyone has a ton of money to spend.

If rate is restricted on server, simply down your cl_cmdrate and cl_updaterate to fit! (Although 4000 is really small for NS).. admins can use other ways to reduce bandwitch (such as changing cl_cmd and cl_updaterate on clients..

messing with that is hell. When I runned a HL server I stopped trying. Now I rent one which is fixed for me. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

but yeh, most admins DO know what is needed. I remember the xs4all steam servers lagged. But or admin was full aware. He just did not have a desent machine for it at the time and he had a whole network running which also needed bandwith.

    (fixed now yay)

But bottum line I agree on is that they know.
