It sounds like hardware vendors like Dell or etc put in bigger hard drives then they claim but w/ a hidden partition w/ the "factory default" image on it, and then when customers screw up they just Ghost the image back and viola, and apparently some people are confused by this.

At least that was my 50 second "didn't really read it" interpretation. :P

The concept here if not to explore all sizes and go "wow..." <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Don't try it, period. Hard drives don't have the physical capacity to store that much data, you'll just end up corrupting it.

    Correct.

If you hard drive can only hold "#" of gigabytes at one time, no matter what you do you can't make it store "#" + 0.0000001 gigs.

510 GB from a 200 drive is impossible. wth could the companies possibly gain by not letting the user use all their space? if anything they'd TELL the user that the drive had 510 GBs of storage space and jack up the price... Lots. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Just a note if you didn't already know... Do NOT do this. If the instructions even work properly, the extra space you get is hidden for a reason. It's either broken sectors or extra sectors used to replace broken ones.

Isn't this all just a fancy way of confusing the allocation table into thinking there's more space than there is?

I know another way to double your harddrive space....

You buy the exact same hard drive (space) and install it! WEWEwewewetet!

And I know this works, because I've done it!

    okay im dumb

You'd think that, but then look at the CPU industry. Same cpu is sold at like 8 different speeds with the only difference being that its locked at a certain speed and engineered to blow up if at a faster speed than normal. :P

Yes, but that's the CPU industry. This is the hard drive industry. There are physical limits to how much stuff you can cram in your hard drive, there is no way to magically "overclock" it and get more storage space. This is a myth, and a dangerous one seeing as you can lose a lot of data.
