Readyroom

What do you look like?
Before you join the game, while in the readyroom, what does your player model look like?

Oh, and while I'm at it, I just want to let people know that, for the first few weeks anyways, the teams are going to be terribly uneven. In tour of duty, the teams are always uneven because everyone picks US, even though the two sides are relativly even. With aliens and marines being so different, I guarantee people will want to pick one side over the other. Does NS allow players to join the team with the most players?

As always, I apologize for the lack of intelligence in either of my questions.

this was JUST discussed. Read the other posts before asking questions.

In the readyroom, everyone looks like a marine at first. If you are an alien, then you return to the readyroom, you look like the alien you last were.

You can join any team you want, and the way the game balances it is by dynamically altering the rate of resource growth for your team. The team with more players gets less resources.

I don't think the teams will be uneven because both sides offer a very unique gameplay expierence, meaning there will be much to explore regardless of what your gaming preference is. And the aliens aren't viatmanese.

Although it should be said, marines are more strategy oriented, aliens are more team death-match.

This is precisely what makes the teams uneven.

    EDIT AGAIN:
The point I'm trying to make is that if one side is different in anyway, people are going to find some reason to favor one side over the other. The time span of exploring both sides will be reasonably short

Not too true. This isn't Counter-Strike where the difference between the teams is a couple of weapons and models, this isn't even like AVP. Each team has a completely unique set of models, a completely unique set of attacks, a totally different style of play(The alien team has all of those things on one team). In a game such as CS there are about 2 possibilities to play succesfully, camp or rush. There seem to be a about a billion possibilities in NS.

The point is, Natural Selection will have a nice sized community, most people here are decent enough that it's safe to say they won't make teams uneven, who's to say the rest of the community will be bad apples? People will try both teams simply because they're so unique, and people will find their own preferences because each side offers something for any kind of gamer.

The only thing I could see being a problem is a lot of people wanting to be marines simply because of familiarity and guns, but I don't think it will be that big of a problem because in a good game the other team offers enough interesting gameplay that people will want to play it. NS looks like a good game.

I thought (in the playtests at least) you used the standard Half-Life models until you joined the game

The thing is all of those CS people are gonna go over to aliens for their Uber score and K3w1 attitude but TFC fans will favor tight nit marine teamplay action, and seeing how CS vastly outnumbers TFC well it looks like they are going to be uneven anyway- BUT if an admin autobalances a team then someone might go "Boy this sucks, I really wanted to be an alien I quit!"

I can only predict the future...

Oh jeeze, people... have a little faith! Let NS make you its eternal bizatch with all of its grandeur and purty screenshots! I play CS, and I'm looking forward to playing EVERYTHING in NS. Not just aliens, or just marines, I'm wanting to try out every. single. aspect. of this game... and from the way it looks now, I bet it's good enough to where most other people will too.

aliens don't get Heavy armour, aliens don't get a boom stick (shotgun or HMG, depending on the player). I think a CS fan will either go for the score (aliens) or the guns (marines), so a nice middle is reached.

Well...it didn't work for Tour of Duty, that's all I want to say. You can quote me later...

    NS isnt Tour of Duty.

I dont think balancing will be too much of a problem. I thought everyone would want to be aliens, most other people thought everyone would be marines. The PTers play as everything.
The first few weeks will be the most balanced as people will want to try everything before theyve decided what their favourite way to play is. Even then I dont think it will be unbalanced as NS is a different kettle of fish from other mods and will attract more TeamPlayers.
  • BattousaixBattousaix Join Date: 2002-06-25 Member: 822Members
Actually on the polls of whic is the best team, most of the ppl picked marines, so you are completely wrong Jops, and me myself will pick aliens because im really curious about aliens because you just know they have spores bile bombs and all that habilities, but you dont really know how flying, wall-walkin, blinking feels, but you do know how holding a nice gun feels, so i´ll choose the more weird and cooler team, the unknown...... the aliens =)
After 1 round or 2, ill play marines and support and follow all the order the commander gives me, and not running around the map........
After i´ve played 2 or 3 rounds more i will choose my preferred team or just alternate 1 round alien 1 marine....
I think you guys should think about that, anyways i´ll try everything ns has to give away and have a lot of fun, you guys should too Thats my 2 cents =P

A little reality check here: NS will not reach the same popularity of CS, TFC or DoD overnight. Once the first public release comes out we will go through another 5 or so updates at the MINIMUM before we can see where the future of this mod will lie for certain.

Look at DoD for instance. 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3 all came out before the huge influx of players arrived (after 2.0). Before then, it was still a relatively small mod. That's what happens with these things.

Over the course of NS's development, its fan base has slowly trickled in. Look at me, I've been here less than a few months (I'm including the hiding in the shadows reading bit, cos there is still plenty more of them out there). After it is first released, we'll see the people who gave up on NS over the years come running straight back, and then things will get quiet. A few more updates will come out. The game might improve (if it needs it ), and hopefully the word of mouth effect will then kick in. After a certain amount of people know, EVERYONE will then know.

Once EVERYONE knows, we will see our n00b rush into NS. Until that time, stressing out over team balancing and CS llamas and what-not wont do you much good. Just take a chill-pill, relax and go with the flow!

What are you even talking about? What does Tour of Duty, a VIETNAM BASED MOD, have anything at all to do with Natural Selection? Tour of Duty is just another boring, realistic war game with every gun having an equal/opposite on both teams. Why do peeople choose USA over the vietmanese? Gosh man, I just can't figure that one out.

I THINK he may have been talking about the no-score for the marines thing. I've never tried Tour of Duty, but at one point, they had scores off on CS by default, and had to be turned on by navigating through the menu. People complained, it was changed back to the way you see it today. If that's what you are talking about, not to fret. If you really need to see your score, be an alien. Live for the mind!

If that's not what he was talking about, then I'm just rambling. Ignore me.

Oh, and Bill, I'm just trying to say that when mods make two teams that are really unique (Like Tour of Duty, well not really, but more unique than CS), people will prefer one side over the other, and usually pick that side and not give a crap about whether or not it makes the teams uneven (Like Tour of Duty). Maybe this won't happen in NS, we'll find out...
