.avi s should be able to played in Mplayer no problem, try reinstalling it, downloading a codec pack, or rename the extension to .mpg (sometimes their interchangeable).
Okay. Let me start by saying I have tried virtually all programs that are listed above, and every one of them is fallibe, except for one (not mentioned):
Kazaa-lite codec pack and media player classic. http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/klcodec200f.exe I have yet to see a video format (real, qt, mov, avi, mpg) fail to play on it.

And as said, you need the Divx codec. It has nothing to do with the player. You need Divx. Plain and simple.
With Media Player Classic and the DefilerPak you will be set to play any Avi, mkv, mov, mkv, ogm, and even some .rm files. And it does DVD too. Its what I hook up my little anime-peons with, as part of my plot for world domination.

Windows Media Player 9 can't open it, because it has an "error downloading codec".
So, if someone could point me towards a player, or a Windows Media Player 9 avi codec...

The trailer uses Divx v5.0.5. You don't need any of those other codec packs or video applications to play the trailer.

Maybe its because I'm using it on Windows...
I always feel so dirty, like I sold a little bit of my soul, everytime I use a piece of Macintosh software...

Go download a program called "GSPOT". Open the AVI with it and it'll tell you what codec(s) you need. Then go DL those codecs.
