Quick Q For You Hardware Geeks

I purchased a GeForce FX5200 a few weeks ago. I was expecting perfectly smooth 100fps, but of course, it didn't work out due to my setup:

1.2ghz Intel Celeron
256MB SDRAM

Now, my mom has a

1.47ghz AMD Athlon (1600+)
350~ SDRAM

I asked my mom (my bad, FORCED) my mom to switch computers with me, but I don't have time to make the switch until saturday. When I asked why I wasn't getting 100fps before, a lot of people cited my celeron processor as the problem. So the question is, is the 1.47ghz with the ram upgrade any better? Don't tell me to upgrade to DDR ram because I can't... Obviously, my mom's not too happy about having to switch computers, especially since I practically lectured her on why me getting the better computer is more important, so for the sake of family relations, tell me if the upgrade is worth it!

its a better computer, yes, youd be better off with it. but dont force your parents.

i have a 600 mhz computer, have had it for the past 3+ years, do all my stuff on it.

i could have leeched so much money from my parents, but i dont... i just dont like stealing from them... even though they're practically throwing money at me

i think for the sake of family relations you should stop the trade, and apologise to your mum.

make sure you have all the proper drivers, sell/get rid of the celeron, get some money [130 australian?] and get a 1.8 athlon

She won't be mad after realizing that nothing's actually changed. She's convinced somehow that it'll take 5 minutes to startup and 20 seconds to start IE.

Yea its a good switch, but that FX5200 card is still junk. Eh, halflife is more a cpu-based game than anything else.

In the old days this is where i'd gripe about HL being 4+ years old and how any cpu that costs more than $10 is more than enough than what HL needs.. but then valve has to go and make Steam and astronomically raise the system requriements of a 4 year old game to modern day standards all without improving any visuals whatsoever.

    gg Valve.

Well in ns, i cant even get 100fps all the time with my setup. my setup is a 2500+ w/pc3200 512 megs ram in dual channel mode - geforce fx 5900. your new computer will do alot better though, just dont exspect 100fps all the time.

Well Last. Here is something to consider. I have a Geforce4 Ti4200 128DDR 8x AGP. Best card of its time. Two years ago anyway. I have an Athlon XP 2700+ 512 2700 DDR.

I get perfectly smooth gameplay in C&C Generals for comparison reasons.

    I tried an FX5200. Choppy Choppy Choppy. GG Nvidia. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

The wheels of progress are oiled by the blood of the poor, pop. That's just the way it is <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Then again, I'm not too happy with Steam at the moment. The idea is sound, but the execution, especially the near-ghostly Friends service, leaves much to be desired.
