Never in that entire movie did it look like the Americans were losing (even the battle where they lose: They're killing germans left and right...oh no atank....*blam* *blam* *blam*...more germans die....and then eventually all the American's are together and someone says "I hate losing a fight." or something....up until then I didn't even know they were [censored]ing losing. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
At the start of WW2 the German army was feared as an unstoppable force sweeping across Europe, but that was at the start of the war - not in the final stages. And even then in BoB they have a hell of a fight on their hands all the time.

D-Day, Easy lands, attacks convey very succesfully, attacks 88's in what is now a famous military encounter. I personally apologise for Easy company being so successful - but that wont change the fact that it happened. Band of Brothers is based on the real life stories and events suffered by Easy company - when an Easy company man dies in the film, that means he died IRL.

When Easy company attacks a town and takes it over with minimal losses - that means IRL they attacked said town and took minimal losses. BoB constantly shows Easy company men and other Americans being shot and killed and wounded. Its constantly referring to the losses the company suffered. They attack Carentan on D-Day plus 1, lots of scenes showing americans being mowed down by MG fire, getting sniped, getting blown up in booby traps, getting shelled. They then move out, have a fight with a German paratrooper division, and when German panzers show up, seriously look like they are going to lose. The main character in that episode starts out as a coward, finally finds his feet and then gets shot in the throat to die later on in hospital. In the same episode it shows an american soldier bayonetting his officer by accident.

Then when the americans get thrashed in operation market garden, they get totally pwned by german tanks. Lots of retreating, several Easy men die.

Then comes Bastogne - pretty much two episodes showing americans either having the crap shelled out of them, getting ambushed by an mg, accidentally killing themselves with looted lugers and dying while medics try to help them. Then they attack a town, and heaps of Americans drop like flies because of an incompetant officer. They manage to take the town, and then 5 of them get sniped while celebrating. It even shows an American soldier trying to dig a foxhole with his own bare hands he was so out of his mind with terror.

I think my points been pretty well made. BoB is definately NOT an "Americans are invincible fighting machines" movie. Easy company didnt often lose - but thats histories fault, not the screenwriters. The entire 10 series is full of Easy company men dying, getting blown up and having horrible things happen to them. Its crazy and its ignorant to call it unrealistic because they rarely lost.

Suggestion - rewatch the series and tell me if it looks like Easy company are laughing their way through the entire German army. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Yes, I'm well aware BoB is supposed to be based off of an actual airborne division. I also know their attack on the 88s is now a well documented military manuver and is now the textbook form of an assault on a defended posistion.

I'm also not saying no American's die in the movie (...series). However, in one episode they show death figures that are 26 dead and a bunch of people wounded (I think it's the one where the germans are coming down a hill and eventually get tank support, and then are driven off by bazookas). Sure, the American's are being shelled, some guys finger gets shot off and there's lots of explosions- but you only see a 3 - 5 Americans actually die. However, they show every single german soldier who gets shot.

There's also the example I mentioned before, where the American's are actually retreating, and it doesn't even seem like they're retreating.

Saving Private Ryan would probably be a better example of this: D-Day is done fine (as plenty of veterans attest to). Especially at the end of the movie in Ramelle, where 10 American's hold off a bunch of tanks and 50+ infantry.

Especially the church tower, upon coming into an enemy town that tower would have been leveled almost immediately.

Tears of the Sun is probably a better example yet, but seeing as it's based off of no actual event, it's just a war/action movie and not an actual historical occurance.

I only have this problem with WW2 and earlier movies really, as the more modern you get the fewer American casualties there are to enemy casualties (Black Hawk Down is a fairly good example of a decent movie - as there were 1,000-10,000 Somali deaths and not that many American deaths). The germans had superior weapons and technology for most of the war, but during all the movies whenever a german is shot it's a victory for everyone, and an american being shot is a sign of losing, so they're not shown as much.

It's probably why I like movies based off of All Quiet on the Western Front, because if they're filmed by Americans: it's french and germans, and nobody really cares about them (compared to Germans vs Americans).

Again, I'm not refuting the proof that the American Airborne (and British) weren't victorious or anything, but usually movies are more keen to show Allies mowing down Germans than the other way (unless it's for dramatic, "Oh, no! We're losing!" mentality).
