Request To Mappers

<div class="IPBDescription">..</div> I can say honestly that I play alot of NS. I was in the download line way back when NS 1.0 hit the internet, and its a game I very much love.
I just have one gripe/observation. The maps, great and varied they are, are still very much alike in that "Marines start in clean marine start, go find the three, and ONLY three infested hive areas"
I wish that there was a map(or mapper willing to do it) that broke the mold some. I would like to see a station completely over-run by the kharaa, where hive's occupied the area for long periods of time. I think it would also make a great backstory to the map as well, something about the TSA bombarding the the known hive chambers from space with nukes or lazers, and then sending in the Frontiersman to clean up, only to find that although the strikes burned the hives clean from the station, there were other sites that could support the Kharra and the aliens quickly regrouped and pushed back at the invading marines.
Of course there would have to be some creative texture artists making the "burned" infestation areas believable.
And another thing, why do marines always start on the outskirts? ns_delta I think had a start in the center and it was brilliant I thought, or even if the aliens had a central location.
I would just like to see if anyone had put together a map that broke the mold. I see so many great maps being put out, I just wanted to throw out my thoughts maybe to stir someone up.

so many talented mappers in here.

    A map like this would not work for NS without a whole lot of testing. Mapping for NS has rules which a mapper must obey for the map to work with the NS gameplay. Also a map like this could have major balance issues which must be tested.
    Now I'm not saying it can't be done, nor am I saying it's a stupid idea. Heck I like some of the ideas. But if a mapper would take on a poject like this it has almost no chance of going official. And would take a whole lot more work to finish (due to gameplay tests on balance etc...)

    Read the following so it's more clear why these rules exist <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I have read the FAQ, whats wrong with the ideas?
    Im not saying there should be multiple hives or anything strange like that. I just am suggesting that the marine start could be the "theoretical forth hive" that the TSA nuked before sending in thier advance party. Imagine a hive area where the bacterium is scorched off the walls by fire, with a gaping hole looking out in space where the strike hit,(with a nifty blue forcefield in place to stop the suffocation of the advance party) instead of some perfectly clean room that got picked for its distance from the infestation.
    I mean, IM a United States Marine. It should go without saying that if these guys are the Marines of the Future they they would know how to make an entrance. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    "The area should be well lit and should have space to allow the commander to build a base. There will be heavy traffic in the base area as players spawn, teleport through phase gates, equip themselves, repair structures, and regroup."

    I see no problem here. Just use the burning debris as an alternative to the poorly lit hive area's we are used to.

    Kouji, who is your avatar, I have been trying to figure it out ever since you switched from johnny bravo.....

    The only real setback I see is the mapping entity limit, with all that infestation it would be hard not to run over the limit IMO.

    Ok I misundestood... I thought you where going on a bout more hives then 3 and also some sort of event which could be triggered by the marines resulting in a laser blast from space where the remaining hives are... Since that would have problems in NS <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    At the moment what I've seen in NS 3.0. The third hive is most of the time not needed(when the aliens play as a team that is). But if the marine start was going to be the third hive. Then it would be easier to take the second hive. Since hive three is already the marine start. I think this would be to much in the marines their advantage...

    Creating a hole in the hull of a vessel would add a nice touch though. Maybe the docking ports where busted or something and the marines had to blast away one of the docking doors which was then temporarely patched with a forcefield during the battle...

    Interesting, I'm mapping at the moment on ns_achio maybe I will add this blasting a hole idea to the marine start (got to modify the backstory though). However it's not going to be hive 3...

    [edit]
    grammar error...

    I never said that the Marines should set up shop in the third hive. I mean whos to say that a throughly infested station wouldnt have FIVE hives? In the Universe of NS im sure there are places with more than 3 hives. But to put more than 3 in a game is not such a good idea(yet, who knows what the future of the game holds). I was saying for immersion, the marines start off in a hive area(just looks like a hive mind you, I dont mean place a 4th hive entity on the map), that has been blasted by orbital strikes. But there are still 3 other hives. The aliens cant "take" the marine spawn back as a hive room though, the infestation would have been stripped away more or less by the blast.
    I just think that would be a cool place for the marines to start. As it stands now, it looks like someone dusted the place for them before they get there because it was a bit dirty.
    I mean come on, these are Marines, you dont roll out the red carpet for them, they blow a hole in your bathroom wall and move into your kitchen.

    I think Kouji isn't getting your idea I hope I am however... he means the ENTIRE station/ship is taken over by the aliens and that the MS would be a fictional "fourth hive area" it wouldn't have a hive or be able to be a hive it would just be what was left of the "fourth hive" after the nuke/blast or whatever. Right?

    it would be cool for there to be 4 hive locations but aliens can only get 3 so marines cant relocate to a hive and alliens cant get 3 hives without winning
    or having more than one marine start and whenever the round starts it picks on of the marine starts and thats the start that way the map would be less repetetive

    Right. He's talking about a change in the aesthic of the map rather than in the core gameplay--it's basically fighting on turf that's been overrun by the Kharaa previously instead of a newly infested spot--taking the fight to the aliens. Infestation would be much heavier throughout the entire map.

    I dunno if I'd be able to play a map like that. Infestation gets REALLY boring to look at, if the lighting is right, can camoflauge skulks really well, and overall, just doesn't look good. Plus your r_speeds would be through the roof if you wanted it all to be full of debris and broken up.

    So your saying a very dirty map which is damage beyond recognition or at least very damaged overall... Now that I read the your firts and second post (while being more awake, I have no idea how I came to those conclusion <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

    r_speeds can be maintained no problem, just has to have a good solid layout, and with the use of visblockers and hint it can be maintained.
    As DarkATi said the entity limit would be a problem with all the infestation hanging from ceilings, walls etc... We need more textures for a map like this. Then this problem could be avoided, but then to make the map look interesting and not boring we would need alot of different infestation/infested wall textures (also the burned ones.

    Once again... How did I come to those conclusions, lol <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Relying on what? Short hallways, 90 degree turns, stumpy hallways, and small rooms? That'd be a terrible map. Sure you could accomplish it without the 'damaged' feel and with very featureless infestation, but overall, I don't think this idea would pan out at all.
  • Kouji_SanKouji_San Sr. Hινε Uρкεερεг - EUPT Deputy The Netherlands Join Date: 2003-05-13 Member: 16271Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Blue
    lol no not 90degrees turn at every bend... I can be attained pretty easy if the layout is correct, not being able to see from one complex room/hallway into the next complex one. And with some use of HINT a 45 degrees bend would work perfectly if it's really needed.

    No one likes 90, 180 bendy hallways maps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I like this idea, very much. Perhaps an NS version of Meteora will include this.

    Oh and BTW for anyone else taking this on, there is a custom WAD out by ChromeAngel I believe that has all kinds of "normal" textures infested.

    Ns_Meteora here I come!

    Well I maybe I am going to create a totally devestated/infested map when I get achio finished, havent seen one yet <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    25% done... Hmmm well maybe it would be a co map. But I already have a great idea on a co map and I don't even have a lot time for achio. To many ideas not enough time <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I think that this map idea is a very good one. No offense to all those working on the maps, they are great!! But way too much alike in some aspects. This would totally be a change from the norm, I do however think that it would make a better CO map than NS but we will see. I'm looking forward to what lies ahead. "What will be will be"
