Connecting To Server Problems

No idea whats wrong or how to fix it.
Anyone know what may be causing the issue? and how it may be resolved?

I also have this problem, I can't play in ANY servers.

Although I played the day before this started happening without problems... what's up?

Windows XP SP1
AMD Athlon 1.1 GHZ
Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB
SB Live!
Cable modem (D-link DSS-5+ Switch II)

All I do is join a server, and it says downloading and validating resources or something then hangs. ONCE I got past that, to the next few bars, but then it froze there too.

make sure you set steam to not auto patch everything.


It is also possible that it is actualy patching HL and the factor that steam just BITES with status bars is throwing you off.

Try telling steam to patch HL then turn off auto patching.

If it seems to freeze whilst patching JUST LEAVE IT (even if it says not responding in the task manager)

I'm talking about connecting to servers. Steam runs fine. It responds in task manager. I can exit out of the server just fine. It just stops at "verifying and downloading resources".
