Fallout: Brother Hood Of Steel

<div class="IPBDescription">hmmm...</div> I was at rogers video the other day looking through the PS2 rentals when I happend to come across the title "Fallout: Brother Hood Of Steel". On further inspection I was surprized to find that this game was not a port of fallout tactics, but actually a new game in full 3d, although with somewhat similar looking gameplay. I wasn't actually able to pick up the game, as I was with some friends and we only really wanted to get a video, but I was surprized to see it, as I was under the impression that the fallout series was long dead (dispite the myriads of rumors). Has anyone had a chance to try this game yet? If so, did it stand up to the name of its predicessors? actually any further information about this game would be nice, as from it's website I can't really garnish any idea of how related this game is to the previous fallouts other than the fact that it has a similar look. Give me your thoughts.

It's a mindless shooter that just shares the name of the fallout franchise.

I see we have another person curious about the new title with the name Fallout slapped on it. You've said it appears to have gameplay like Fallout: Tactics, and the full name "Fallout: Tactics; Brotherhood of Steel" may make the two seem confusingly similar.

Let me make this clear: I loved Fallout 1 and 2, and liked FoT <i>almost</i> as much. My only complaint about FoT was that it wasn't as much of an RPG.

This new "Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel" however, isn't as much of a <i>game</i>.

Imagine taking Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, changing it into a futuristic setting, sucking away anything and everything innovative, slapping a well-known franchise name on it, and then marketing it towards people who've barely head of said franchise while deeply insulting and angering the franchise's existing fanbase. That's a decent summary of what Interplay has done to us by closing Black Isle Studios (that's right, this Fallout game isn't even made by the same people as the others!) and cancelling the real Fallout 3 to make this console-only dust-attraction-device.

But wait, there's more! <a href='http://www.nma-fallout.com/' target='_blank'>No Mutants Allowed</a> and <a href='http://www.duckandcover.net' target='_blank'>Duck and Cover</a>, two of the best Fallout series fansites I'm aware of, have been keeping up with magazines and websites who've reviewed this new console game. Let's ignore the scores and pay attention to quotes, where the real truth comes out:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The most compelling thing about Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is the question it raises: What the (*(#^*! was Interplay thinking?!...If you?re a Fallout fan, do yourself a favor and don?t go within twenty feet of this game. If you?re an action-RPG fan, try a Dark Alliance game or Champions of Norrath instead. The game gets an ?M? rating, but it?s the least mature game I?ve ever had the displeasure to play<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->--From <a href='http://www.edbis.com/' target='_blank'>EDBIS</a>

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->.....this is exactly the same game you played 2 years ago in BG:DA. From the interface, to the traits/skills you learn, to the quest types, everything feels like it was just ripped from that game and given a new name to sell more copies...In fact, I can't recommend buying this game to anyone, especially at full price.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->--<a href='http://www.intoliquidsky.net/' target='_blank'>Into Liquid Sky</a>

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->What a thermonuclear disappointment. To someone like me, who loved all three Fallout role-playing games on PC, this is a power fist to the face -- an insult, Brotherhood's setting has neither the bleak, epic feel of Fallout's post-apocolyptic Wasteland, nor any of its characteristic '50's retro-futurism. Its mutants and ghouls are merely monsters, not the irradiated subcastes of humanity they were in previous games. Worst of all, its gameplay offers nothing but rote combat, nearly devoid of strategy, story, or purpose.
What's left is a tedious trek through a vapid version of Mad Max. You'll waste your first three hours wandering and hunting vermin. If you make it through that, you'll graduate to boring fetch quests and more extermination missions.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--><a href='http://www.egmmag.com/' target='_blank'>Electronic Gaming Monthly</a>

And those are just some of the more recent quotes. There's plenty more where those came from.

If you want even more, check out the famous <a href='http://fmf.knightcommand.net/index.php?chapter=27_things_about_fobos' target='_blank'>27 reasons why FOBOS will suck</a>, and then see if you can have any respect for the company after reading about their <a href='http://rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2796' target='_blank'>press kit</a>(warning for some sexual content)...ugh.

    Sounds like a fun game.

Seriously though, has anyone actually played it? I'm not trying to be different or anything, but most of what I've heard is horribly biased accounts. Can someone tell me how it starts out, how it goes and everything, and what you do?
With no negatory (is that a word?) comments?

[edit] Geez. Barely a minute passed, and already the topic is 2 topics down from the top of the page. People must really hate this. [/edit]

Heh, fair enough steele, I also loved F1,F2, and F:T;BOS, I guess I was just hoping that the series wasn't really over, but I think I can pretty much say that it now definitively is.

It starts out with you eliminating scorpions from the basement of some trader.

    Sound familiar?

IT'S EXACTLY LIKE BALDURS GATE: DARK ALLIANCE.

You then run around shooting crap while your badly animated black man (for example) goes "SHEEEEEAT" or whatever else they thought would be fun for a minority to say. Eventually you stab yourself in the eye for being dumb enough to play this game. Then you forget the number for 911 and you bleed to death.

    The end.

In all seriousness, you do what you did in Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance with guns instead of axes etc. Basically not a whole lot.
