from <a href='http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5Bln%5D;833786' target='_blank'>here</a>:

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->The most effective step that you can take to help protect yourself from malicious hyperlinks is not to click them. Rather, type the URL of your intended destination in the address bar yourself. By manually typing the URL in the address bar, you can verify the information that Internet Explorer uses to access the destination Web site. To do so, type the URL in the Address bar, and then press ENTER. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Perhaps its time to upgrade: <a href='http://www.mozilla.org' target='_blank'>here</a> or <a href='http://www.opera.com' target='_blank'>here</a>.

    Typing URLS in the URL address bar? GENIUS! Whoever thought of that deserves a shiny hat. Preferably pointy, and with a large "D" on the front.

    We were all new once. That's probably a brainwave to some new users. And if you think THAT'S a bit stupid, you haven't read the Windows manual. Not only does it tell you how to click a mouse, it also tells you what the difference is between a left click and a right click is.

    This protects from:

    <a href='http://www.kiddie-Pr0N.net/img001.jpg' target='_blank'>www.bingo.com</a> (the obvious one)

    it is also possible to make browsers display incorect info in that little bar at the botton (you know the ony you all just looked at when you highlited my bingo link?)

    Yeah, but microsoft could just fix that bug and be done with it. Instead, they say things like:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->To try to identify the URL that a hyperlink will use, follow these steps:

      1. Right-click the link, and then click Copy Shortcut.
      2. Click Start, and then click Run.
      3. Type notepad, and then click OK.
      4. On the Edit menu in Notepad, click Paste.

    By doing this, you can see the full URL for any hyperlink and you can examine the address that Internet Explorer will use. The following list shows some of the characters that may appear in a URL that could lead to a spoofed Web site:

        * %00
        * %01
        * @

    For example, a URL of the following form will open <a href='http://example.com' target='_blank'>http://example.com</a>, but the URL in the Address bar or the Status bar in Internet Explorer may appear as <a href='http://www.wingtiptoys.com:' target='_blank'>http://www.wingtiptoys.com:</a>

    <a href='http://www.wingtiptoys.com%01@example.com' target='_blank'>http://www.wingtiptoys.com%01@example.com</a><!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    you all have to realize that were are literally in the top 1% of computer users in the world, it seems like a joke to us, but *most* people who just use computers for e-mail and word processing *don't*

    we can't be ignorant of others who aren't as skilled!

    I quit trusting any links sent to me after I tricked a friend into checking out a few not cool websites by hiding the address. I grew accustomed to right click -> copy link and manually pasting. Much easier than retyping it. Also helps when you don't actually want your link to open in Internet Explorer.
