Broadband question

Who do you use?
Howdy, folks. With the imminent release of Natural Selection, I decided it was time to splurge on broadband DSL. Problem is, I'm having some trouble deciding who to go with. It's difficult to find a good provider. I initially wanted to try Speakeasy, especially with their "Free PS2 with a new account" promotion, but when I called, they informed me that because of the area I was in, the hardware and activation would total $400! ($225 for the hardware, no rebate for my provider's area, and $175 for activation, no rebate there, either. Curse you, Florida.) I was once with my telephone provider, but I'd rather try and avoid THAT fiasco again, if I can. Bellsouth's mantra is, apparently, get them signed up, and then ignore them. If we don't answer their calls, maybe they will quit trying to call us. Once in a while, though, I managed to get through. After a wait, of course.

So, basically, I was just wondering who you recommend for me to try?

Thanks a lot!

-Ryan!

SInce you are in the US, you can't get the best ISP out there Shaw, a Canadian cable providor has no caps or download or upload speeds, and is very leiniant on the amount of data you send. I uploaded about 20 game demos/stupid movies/music, etc totally around 20 gigs in a month, not a peep from them. My speeds average around 200-300kb/s down and 100kb/s up.
Total cost of $40.00/month Canadian, or $80.00/month if you get digital cable TV with it (like I do).
Total setup fee of $100-$200 (depends if you get cable, and what form of cable, plain or digital)

I use ATTBI. Not satisfied though; quits on me for 10-15 minutes every once in a while. Not what I'd call service.

I use UVA, though having a great deal of difficulty right now, I can normally find enough servers with low enough pings.

I have Roadrunner, through time warner...

Works well, we had some trouble with it, but it was with the lines to our house, not on their end.

    Minimum speed is 384 kbps.

Well even though I live in Australia, I felt it necessary to remind you lot that you are so very, very lucky when it comes to ISPs. I (My parents) pay US$45 a month for 512/128 ADSL with a three gig per month cap. And that was with a US$200 installation fee.

    You lucky, lucky bastages.

I use AT&T Broadband. Decent providor, average 130k/s down, 35 k/s up. It's pretty reliable too, only time it has gone down has been from power failures.

i pay 39.95 USD a month for it.

RoadRunner is awesome, if you live in snowy Florida. I use it when there's no ice on the overhead cable lines, and still haven't gotten around to using their email service. You should see if they have any partnerships with schools in your area. We got a $10 discount on ours for attending a local junior college... Stay away from AOL, or anything with huge pastel colored marketing. RoadRunner has no advertisements when you log on, just pure high speed access. and you can use a router box/hub/switch with it, even though thay say they will charge you more. they've been to our house twice in about 2 years, and have said nothing about our router that sits next to the cable modem hardware...

Got my cable through Cox Communications (San Diego, CA), and for the 4 years I've been using them, I've only had a couple problems, and they have uberhelpful phone techies that got me back up n' runnin in no time. Great speeds too, benchmarks put it at 2.5-3 mps (but average I get somewhere between 150 and 400 kps.) I wouldnt connect to the net with anything slower than broadband, and I probably wouldnt use anyone else. Cost is the typical $40 a month.

PS No, I do not work for Cox... Nor does anyone else in my Family...

I use Telewest tho' that's not much use to you in the US. £25 a month if you have phone and TV from them as well. Ping of 33 and no lag at all. Ah bliss......

if you can get RR in your area, thats what I would suggest going with

I also run it through a router, however I have nvr heard of this 'no router' thing (seeing how as the dude who set it up for my mom when I am not there helped her with the router also ;D)

oh well, I have had very few probs with em (I had some continuous problems but that was som bad stuff in my house and they came and gave me a new spliter that upped the signal str thus fixxing all my problems)

also b/c I am at college now my mom cuts it out for when I am not home (saving her an ### load of $$ b/c she just checkes her email and such at work then) and they are REALY good about stuff like that

Roger, resurrecting topics that are pages back is frowned upon.
