Reset Gamma Problems

<div class="IPBDescription">Radeon9600 XT, steam?</div> I recently re-installed Steam with the old 500kb installer to rid myself of all of the crud that was floating around my steam folder. I downloaded half-life (no CD key required, I was using an old account), installed the NS2.0 beta installer, and went on to start playing.

This all happened after I got a new Radeon9600 XT to replace my aging Geforce4 MX420. The game still worked perfectly, and heck, I was even able to turn on anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering for the first time.

And then I re-installed Steam and NS.

My Steam client, for no appearant reason, is buggier this time around. It used to work without flaw, and now it gives me two, very annoying bugs. Number one, HL never exits. I have to manually kill the process after exiting. Also, after exiting steam, it always, without fail, gives me this:

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Program: C:\PROGRA~1\Steam\Steam.exe
File: \p4clients\rel_beta\Ptojects\Common\Misc\Win32Registry.cpp
Line: 442

bCloseRet==0L

(Press Retry to debug the application - JIT debugging must be enabled)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Now, I know that this is no NS issue, and it looks more like a registry conflict from an old entry on the last install to me, but it may have something to do with my main issue...

Now, When I play ingame, under OpenGL, 1024x768 and 32-bit color (same as desktop settings other than the OpenGL part), it makes the gamma bright, as usual. I prefer to play with my gamma reset, because I like the dark, menacing atmosphere, and blinding HUDs and menus hurt that. I alt-tabbed and ran resetgamma.exe, and the desktop returned to normal gamma, but the game didn't! Holy space cow!

The only way I can get it to work is by running windowed. I hate running windowed for two reasons:

1) Annoying window heading thingy. Great for windows, not for atmosphere.
2) Can't minimize the game properly! I can only get the taskbar to show, so I have to run resetgamma from a command line.

Can anybody help me with my problematic little problem?

    ummm, the game should NOT be 'blindingly' bright before you run reset gama.

    You shouldn't run reset gama at all infact (unless the game crashes and your desktop is over bright)

    It sounds like you have your moniter cranked way to bright, I would suggest fixing that first.

    ......

    do you have green text? if so thats a different bug.....

    as for the other bugs, try the steam forums.

    The brightness, I have no idea how to fix other than the gamma reset. I dont think there's another way, but I have always had to put up with it for fear of losing sound if I alt tab.

    Gamma reset is a tool to reset your gamma settings after your game has crashed for some reason, leaving you with a too bright desktop. It should probably never be run whilst the game is alt-tabbed.

    If you want it to be darker ingame, change the ingame gamma settings in the video options control panel.

    Blindingly bright was an exaggeration...

    I'll turn the gamma down. Last time, I turned it way too far down, making me blind, so I wanted to avoid that. It should work fine, though. Thanks for the help! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Use the gamma_tune.exe program in your NS directory, that will let you set the gamma correctly

    That Registry thing seems to me that steam cannot access the registry to save something, did this error come up with the new install? Do you have access to the registry (administrator)?

    As it turns out, I had my moniter set waaay too bright.

    I have access to the registry. I installed steam in a different directory than last time, so that might be part of the program. I'm going to browse around and see what's wrong.
