Http 500 Error
<div class="IPBDescription">I'm getting it everywhere!</div> Alright, this started happening to me about two months ago.
I cannot update Windows due to this HTTP 500 Error,
I cannot use MSN, Yahoo, ICQ or Trillian messenger services with it, because I get an HTTP 500 "Cannot connect to Server" error. (Although I still can use AIM).
I can't use BitTorrent.
Help! This is driving me nuts! I've tried everything: Pestpatrol, Adaware, Virus Scanning, Norton WinDoctor... Everything!
I tried shutting off my Firewall, and my Virus Detection, but I still get the error.
Yes, I have even defragged my harddrive and did a fresh install of Windows. Still, I get the HTTP 500 error.
I even tried searching for solutions with Google, but I yeilded very little helpful results.
Does anybody know whats going on?!
Thanks for your time,
-Sid

Honestly though, that's the only thing I can think of that'd cause your connection to break when connecting to servers... or whatever.
But what DOS have to do with my problem...?
Firstly, this will only work if you have IE.
OK, here it goes, my little help file just for you. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
<u><b>What Can Cause It</b></u>
When an ASP file encounters an internal server error, the 500 error is displayed in place of the 500-100.asp error.
<u><b>How To Fix It</b></u>
1. Start the Internet Service Manager (ISM), which loads the Internet Information Services snap-in for the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
2. Right-click the appropriate Web site, click New, and then click Virtual Directory.
3. In the Virtual Directory Creation Wizard, click Next. In the Alias text box, type IISHelp, and then click Next.
4. When you are prompted for the path to the content directory, click Browse, select the WINNT\Help\IisHelp folder, and then click Next.
5. On the Access Permissions page, accept all the defaults, click Next, and then click Finish.
6. Right-click the Web site again, and then click Properties.
7. On the Custom Errors tab, select the 500;100 error line, and then click Edit Properties.
8. In the Message Type list box, select URL, and then type /iisHelp/common/500-100.asp in the URL text box.
9. Click OK twice to return to the ISM.
This help is was intended to solve your Internet Explorer 500 error problems. I still don't know why you cant use your messengers though...

Thanks... but...
Where is this Internet Service Manager? Do I have to download it? I ran a search, and my computer could not find it anywhere on my Hard drive.
a) Works.
b) You die.
Failing that pick up your modem and throw it at homeless children.
Firstly, sorry

etc, but that only applies to web servers! He's a client, not a server
From what you say, it sounds like a proxy problem
First step, is to delete the 'hosts' file. It may be called something like 'hosts.sam' or '.hosts' depending on your WIndows version. The only entry should be
127.0.0.1 localhost
ANything else, delete
The next step is to make sure you have no proxy server setup. Open IE, select tools - options and click COnnections, select your server and click Settings. Make sure the proxy fields are empty.
If none of these steps work, its either a problem with the underlying network (eg your TCP or IP settings are wrong), you have a dodgy modem, or it's something else :-)
You are my new God!!
I can't believe how simple it was!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
