I just reformatted, and now (never has happened before the other 30 billion times I reformatted) when I turn on my computer or leave it for a while, it 'logs out' and dumps me on the 'users' page. Never used to do that, functioned just like Win98... help?

do you mean like a password on the screensaver? display properties -> saver -> uncheck on resume, display welcome screen.

or do you mean a total logout that happens even if you're using the computer?

Right Click on Desktop -> Properties -> Screensaver -> Untick "On Resume Display Welcome Screen"

I had the same problem with the screensaver thing, fixed it, but now it kicks me straight to the Logon screen as soon as I boot in

Um...what do you want it to go to? Mine always goes to the "Logon" or "Users" screen....

Mine used to just go straight to the desktop when I turned it on. Probably some crap 'feature' in a new update.

Yes, it could not possibly be operator error at all, right?

Do you have multiple user accounts in use? Is your account set to login automatically? That 'crap feature' is what normal intelligent users do to avoid being wide open to a hack attack from a zombied machine owned by super-geniuses that have their machines autologin. Security updates are such 'crap features'. This sort of thinking is why we all have to have firewalls, so we can keep people like you and your unmanaged machines from taking us out. "Oh my god, I have to login, 5 seconds out of my life I'll never get back". It boggles the mind that we don't have driver's licenses for PC's, because 99% of the internet would have theirs revoked within a freaking week.

    /end rant.

    I blame SunnyD

but honestly, what does it do to click a button upon login? If you haven't noticed, every single network uses not only "put name/pass at logon" but also removes the welcome screen to have the old-school "type in your name as well" thing ala win2k

And windows NT also had ctrl-alt-del upon startup as well I don't know if it's also in XP, but I'm not a security paranoid/freak to bother changing that around

It means that user-based and background based, user-invoked worms and trojans aren't being fired up the instant your PC boots. You know, like that tiny incovenience the whole earth experienced called MSBlast. It also means that when some person is over at your house for a visit that they can't sit down at your PC while you're in the john and have complete access to every bit of your digital information.

/dang, end rant again. I need to start smoking again...

Ironic because it never has and never did ask me to submit a password to tie to my account...

That's because you use lame-o XP home edition. And hopefully when SP2 comes out in a couple months they switch that setting on and make you use a password to protect you from yourself.
