Invisible Weenie Roast
One really neat thing about Dues Ex 2 is its kickass fire system. And since you can pick up and throw all manner of things, you can actually add fuel to the fire and make it bigger!

It burns people really really well. :D So funny to see them running around aflame, only to run into other people and catch THEM on fire. mwahaha

Word. I beat DX2. Get the strength upgrade and toss some flaming barrels at the Order recruiters for a few laughs. That is a great game besides the fire, but not as good as the first one was.

I had a rather interesting experience with those flaming barrels in the Medina.

You know the guy who tries to sell people Swell 11 'cures'? He stands in a corner near the Mosque. Next to him stands such a barrel and a cat roams the area.

I once stood near that place when I had to answer an urgent call and forgot to push Esc.
A while into the conversation, I suddenly hear a bloodcurling scream. After a second of alert confusion, I look at the screen and see the barrel rolling against the wall and the dealer aflame.
The cat must've bumped into the barrel, pushing it nearer and nearer to the dealer. When it hit him, it must've toppled and hit him literally in the face.

Since then, I made a habit out of avoiding the cats in that game at all cost

I played by stealth and had little experience throwing flaming barrels of death at people. In the game.

Best of all is the little yellow security beams (the ones that kill you if you walk through them). Chuck a body into them, and they light up, but they're much easier to keep in the hot zone than with barrels (which roll away). Even metal chairs catch on fire, oddly enough.

Has anyone played on really high graphical settings? Do objects actually show scorch marks and the like after burning?

I'll happily agree that it's not as good as DX1, but to get it early, I

got myself a credit card.

spent roughly six hours searching out import shop sites.

spent the same amount of time verifying their credibility.

payed a rough 70$.
And to me, it was worth it all.

I absolutely hated Dues Ex 1, and I'm very much happy with the changes in 2. I can really get into it now. Its just cool to have an RPG w/o any stats garbage.

Yeah, although I'd argue that the biomod system should've been by far more extensive to ensure that the characters gameplay-relevant development doesn't stop by the time (s)he reaches Antarctica...

I got DX2 for chirstmas. Haven't played it yet, but from that screenshot:

Well I'm still not convinced, I'm almost done with KOTR, and I'm 70% done with Prince Of Persia, I got about 2 hours left on Max Payne 2 and I still got a whole bunch of stuff to do in Homeworld 2. I guess I'll wait till im done with all my other stuff then attempt to buy it for cheap. Thank you for the info.

I had a simmilar experience with fire. I paid the gang of thugs in the Medina in egypt, but then one of them bumped into a flaming barrel knocking it into the other guy who caught on fire and ran around, catching the other guy on fire. The third guy just pulled out his weapon but couldnt figure out what was going on.

That game was fun allthough its kind of annoying to end the game with 13 total biomod cans left over. It was also too easy, even on realistic (the enemys never seem to see you for some reason...)

I have it, although it does not perform very well on my computer. The graphics are not quite smooth in lower resolutions, and with higher ones, it is very slow. You must have a monster of a machine--even on GeForce 4 it looks almost as bad as DooM2.

Also, it flashes a lot in lower resolutions--sort of a bronze color. It occurs often, about every 5 seconds. I wouldn't mind playing in a low resolution.
The shadows look nice, though, they seem to be well done, but it seems that I do not have a shadow.

Although this'll quite possibly be the last straw breaking for the initial topic, I'd like to note that I was perfectly happy with MP2s length. I didn't expect a Final Fantasy sized game when I bought it, it was all it had been made up to be, so why should I complain?

Exactly. The narrative never felt long-winded or too short; it wrapped itself up perfectly, although while I would have prefered to have some with more substance to play aside from the main game.

I've played Deus Ex 2 demo and didn't like it at all. It just wasn't... Deus Ex. Deus Ex 1 was great, propably one of the best games I've ever played.

Did I just miss it, or was there no 'leaning' in DE 2? You know, that 'look behind a corner'-leaning?
  • Nemesis_ZeroNemesis_Zero Old European Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 75Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
Nope, the controls were dramatically simplified, but I don't consider that a bad thing - leaning didn't have any advantages over ducked strafing, anyway.

I definitely think that Deus Ex 1 was far better than the dumbed-down console shooter that IW was. DX1 had a much more realistic storyline, more realistic weapons with none of the universal ammunition crap, a skill system compact enough to keep the game from becoming the dreaded 'level treadmill' but significant enough to impact your strategies and gameplay, and a wicked-sick story with the Illuminati in it. Plus, JC Denton was one of my favorite game characters ever (remember "A bomb is a bad choice for close quarters combat," and "You'll burn alright," from the mole station and Page's last speech?)...

Deus Ex 2 is a good game, but it in no way even APPROACHES the majesty of its predecessor.

Same for Max Payne 2, the story was terrible and that took away most of the points I gave it for style... There were a few good chapters, though, especially the one where they're trying to kill Captain Baseball Bat Vinnie.

What's it everyone has with the unified ammo? I mean, OK, I can see how one might consider it an oversimplification, but in every negative post concerning IW I read, it's cited as though it was a crime only rivalled by child molestation.
What do I care how ammo is managed?

Some people just need to find something to complain about Nem.
  • Nemesis_ZeroNemesis_Zero Old European Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 75Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Constellation
I'm well aware of that. My question isn't whether, but why this? Nobody's going to call IW perfect, but there's more severe issues than the ammo. I'm for example quite peeved at the removal of the (ingenious) LAM-system of grenade/mine combination.
