Well, they did make some changes to the engine. For instance.

How come I can read text properly in the nonSteam version, but the Steam version manages to only render every few letters of chat, scoreboard, console. I can only read HUD messages. Yes, my vid card drivers are up to date

The problem with in-game text is due to the latest HL engine update. Because the engine update was packaged with Steam, many people wrongly blame Steam for the problems.
