I used to get insomnia really bad a while back. It used to come and go for weeks at a time.
Someone suggested meditation for it so I started doing a little before I went to bed and the insomnia has never returned.
You could try that, just do a search for it on the net, theres loads of sites.

Though it depends on what kind of insomnia it is, apparently there's 2 kinds, mental (when your body is tired, but your mind is racing) or physical (body just refuses to stay still, but your mind is knackered)
Or you could be very unlucky and get both at once.
I had the mental kind, so meditation seemed to fit. If its the physical kind then, like suggested, a active day might work.

As a fellow victim of insomnia, I know quite a few things that can help:
1) Get a regular sleep schedule. Get up at the same time every day (I reccomend 9:00 AM at the latest) and go to bed at the same time every night. No later than 12:00 though. If you can't fall asleep, stay in bed anyway. It helps to reestablish your biological rhythm.
2) Exercise. Don;t kill yourself, but a good hour of exercisea day will really do you wonders.
3) Drink lots of water; this does all sorts of good things for your body.
4) Relax. Take a bath, listen to soft music, whatever calms you down.

Try this for a few days. If it doesn't work, seek medical attention, especially if you go 4+ nights without sleep.

I can recommend those things, but if you are forced to live a lifestyle of irregular sleeping patterns (I work from 2 am - 6 am one day a week), being an insomniac can actually benefit you with extra hours for studying, or *cough* goofing off.

Another issue you might want to consider is whether you live your life on a 30-hour day. That's the problem with most of my friends. We cannot achieve everything we need to do in the normal "24-hour" day. So we don't sleep till later, and the days sort of stack upon each other, with us trying to fit sleep in the cracks.

If you're being forced to live a 24-hour lifestyle, I recommend a regular sleeping pattern, weekends included. This means being a spoilsport and making sure you're in bed by 2 am every day, if not midnight (midnight being better for early morning jobs).

As for sleep, it's my opinion that you don't really need that much of it, and if you can sneak in about 8 hours a day, here and there, you'll be fine. Just make sure that you can tolerate sleeping during daylight hours (that's when I usually get 6 of mine in).

I find that watching films in bed causes my eyes to droop...
I often fall asleep half way through films whilst in bed, then I simply
lean over and hit the "OFF" switch on the t.v and nod off.

I recommend early rises, plenty of exercise or activity throughout your
normal day. That should help you get a good nights sleep.

Good luck.

Ever try reading a good book?

usualy when you read before bed when you are somewhat tired, the additional eye strain is enough to make you more tired.

At least it Works for me.

that can work.. but it doesn't sound very accessible. do you have good running stamina? running is the easiest and one of the most beneficial exercises.

The best advice I can give is to go to bed the same time every night.

At first, It will seem like its not working. After a week of going to bed at the same time, your bodily rythms will be in sync, and you wont have any more problems.

Ive got the same problem, And this works wonders. Its just too bad I totally screw up my routines every once in a while...

As a person who has somewhat conquered chronic insomnia, I would advise you one thing: find what is bothering you the most, like what is on your mind the most, or what set of things are, and conquer them. That is the only way of curing this curse, or like some call it: a blessing. Unless you are one of the more medical liable insomnia victims, I cannot see a quick exit course like many in this thread present. You have to find the answers to your problems, I am afraid most of these solutions will probably not work for you, that is unless your form of insomnia is one of the very mild forms; in that case, following things like a sleeping regimine and whatnot "might" work. I might also warn about medications, they are usually temporary and not long term, but they do work might I add-remeron, etc.

The best thing that works for *me* is having a positive attitude towards the day, staying clear of the worries that plague your mind, and when going to bed, staying in one position and focusing on nothing. Eventually, I trained myself to do exactly that and happily, it works most of the times. From a night where sleep was almost seemingly non-existant, I have passed to the stage of actually getting sleep in like 30 minutes and sometimes, an hour or so, depending on how well my mind is behaving.

It is a lot more complicated than that, if you look at it from a deeper mindset. People who usually stay clear of worries of the everyday world, tend to sleep better. Take for example my friend, he can sleep in 2 seconds!! On the floor, anywhere...I can see why to, because he doesn't try to think as much as we forum goer's who suffer with insomnia do...It also, like I said, depends on yourself. Just try to find what is hexing you at the moment, but then again, it could be a serious medical problem, which I a bit doubt.
Well, that about sums up my advice.
