ok first things first ive searched and found out my problem is like this topic : http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...hl=black+screen
but i didnt find it nessecarry to revive an old topic

althought it is not to do with my sound card in my opinion:
here is my system:

My system info:
Windows XP
Radeon 8500
(Driver: Catalyst 3.10
and ive tried others)
AMD Athalon XP 1800+ (Version: x86 Family 6 Model 6 Stepping 2
Speed: 1532 MHz )
Hard drvie :Maxtor 7200RPM hard drive 20GB
BIOS Version: Award Software, Inc. ASUS A7V333 ACPI BIOS Revision 1007
1GB RAM

Sound Card
Manufacturer: C-Media or Legend Audio or something
Model: CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device
Driver: cmaudio.sys
09 November 2003
Not Supported

CD drivers
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D
SAMSUNG CDRW/DVD DVR-106D

I think it is to do with my ati driver as ive had no crashes for a while before xmas where i bought Star Wars Knights of the old republic and i updated my gfx driver to the catalyst 3.8
but that didnt work so i then tried 3.10 but im still crashing alot. However this isnt only affecting swkotor its affecting all my games including ns. ( sorry about it not fully relating to ns as a problem but im sure this is where i can recieve reliable help.)

however i would like to play kotor as with the old driver my computer worked fine but since im having trouble with most of the catalyst drivers is there a specific way i have to set it up?

My system is almost identicial to yours. The first thing I would try would be to fall back to the last working driver version. 3.10 isn't fully debugged though they do work for me.

There's two possible causes for your problem. Overheating or memory leaks from buggy drivers. Try removing the side of your case and maybe setting up a small desk fan to blow into there. Try playing the most graphicially intensive game you can for a while and see if there's any improvement. If it doesn't crash like this, it's probably a hardware problem. Maybe the fan on your video card's GPU is clogged with dust.

Another major problem could be caused by you having a third party program that tries to force a certain refresh rate. Try setting these back to default if you have any running or any of the run-once varieties. Also check in the driver config and fiddle with the refresh rate force in there too. Refresh rate forcers usually stop a game from even starting so it's probably not that but it's worth a mention.

    Hope this helps.
