Yup, could use that. Actually, you are forced to use a 3rd party program, since the serverlist doesnt help you anywhere. But there are some people who don't like to give 3rd party programs additional resources, or just don't like 3rd party programs, and it makes the whole thing more complicated either, since you have to config HLSW/etc. so it can run properly. Many people don't know how to do that.
About the text font: As I said in a couple of posts before, 5 minutes of google research will help you. I changed my Steam font the first day I got Steam. Its kind of complicated, but I can't remember that there was any way to change the font on WON.
Oh well, that makes sense. An entire game platform that took hundreds of hours of work to complete sucks because it does not have the 'right' font rightaway. *sigh* Can we go back on topic now?
I think the number of Steam servers has increased. There are more empty servers added to my list also though - I would have thought servers like TheHaven would atleast have a few people.
Can't wait for 3.0 then you non steam people will have to dl it. I was anti steam before I tried it and apart from the occassional map chnage blip find it a better interface than the standard hl one.
It seems there are very few of us who actually like the 2.0 beta for steam better than regular NS on WON.
I kinda like the whole steam experience now that the bugs have been fixed. Once you bind all your keys in the beta steam client, there is little difference between won and steam. I for one like the slightly larger text better, and some other little things that catch my eye from time to time <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

steam is mostly great assuming you are not on 56k (or worse *shudders*), or wanting to play counterstrike against players who are not hackers. Once you figure out all the weird stuff it does to your settings and how to kill bugs that don't get fixed by reinstalling, its pretty much smooth sailing from there. I'd go so far as to say that steam is far better than anything server list there ever was for the old won system, + we get the fancy friend list too. The only place I would say that steam falls drasticly short is in its inability to run compatibly with cheating death, which for some reason worked way better than vac does.
Typically, when WON goes down, people are forced to use service that is not nearly as good as before. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
Comb@t - server 1 has been running steam for well over a month now and its been empty for well over a month now as well. The unfortunate reality is that a lot of NS players cannot (or wont be bothered to try) get Steam to run reliably with Natural Selection. Until they are forced to move to steam then most players will stick with WON due to unwanted steam hassles that are needed to get it all working nicely.
You are better running won alongside steam and playing NS on won and everything else on steam until 3.0 is released.
Due to its unpopularity I'm simply using server 1 as a testbed to make sure I can actually run steam successfully. Still you are welcome to play there if you can find some fellow gamers who have steam and NS ...

I will bash neither, just list the experiences I have had with each.
When I used WON I used a 3rd party proggy for the server list, now I just use steams. Every game I played on WON if I accidently hit alt+tab (alt is my voice) then my screen would be b0rked and I had to restart the game. Friends list on steam is great, even though some people may not use it, it is a nice feature. I love the steam consol, how it is a window and you can have other windows. Whenever I play I have my server list on the bottom 1/4 of the screen, my consol takin up most of the screen, and my friends next to that. Ever tried to change your controls while playing on WON (other than using the consol). You hit esc, go to controls then change it, then what do you know, you are no longer connected to the server. On steam you can change your controls while still staying connected. If a steam server is full it gives you the option of auto retry. WON just gave you that box that was like OGM!!! S3rver FUlL!!! However, steam runs while you're playing NS, and sucks a lot of system resources, whereas on WON you don't have another program (unless you have a server proggy like I did). Compared to WON I have had a lot more errors on steam, but I really do not get that many. You can get skins and stuff for steam, but WON was just part of your hl. I got 99 fps all the time on WON, but on steam my fps is around 30, but I really haven't messed around with it, but on WON I never had to do anything, it was just 99. The user friendly consol in steam is nice. Maybe it is because I'm just a n00b, but I don't remember the 24903478 commands you can type in there, just parts of some, so the auto complete thing really helps.
I'm sure there are more pros and cons for both sides, but these are all I can think of at the moment.

Steam is much nicer because of the instant messanger, the ability to alt-tab and run Reset Gamma to return to the darker, mysterious spaceship and stations of Natural Selection, and because it has background music for games. And it's ability to update automatically, though I find it pittyful that you have to be Steam supported. Would be nice if you could provide your own content server for your own mod.
I would never go back to WON, despite it makes some mods take a crap load of time to load. One specific one takes 2-3 minutes to start a server, if I remember correctly.

I am tired of hearing people say 'steam sucks' and 'steamed' after every random kick, without thinking even a little bit about what they are saying. since i got steam, which was in spring 2003, i barely had any problems with it, and those that occured were either being fixed by valve, or i could fix them myself with 5-10 minutes of google research. most of the time, its just the user who's unable to solve the problems himself.

Steam updates very fast for me... like 200k/sec+. My friend downloaded CS FULL, which is like 100mb in less than 5 minutes. I love how Steam updates itself. Before, you would go online, try to play, and get "Error, your cleint.dll differs from that of the server".... wooopppdeeeee doooooooo! New update for mod X! So i go to the site and go to the downloads. 1/2 the links are either broken or run at like 1kb/sec. Most anything faster requires me to have a memebership, IE: I have to trade all my personnal info and privacy for a download at like 10kb/sec. WOW, fun. Maybe if I give them my credit report and my social security number they will bump up my wait in line to download the damn thing by like 1000 people. I mean, waiting an hour to download something that will take 8 more really rocks! No, really, it does. So , about 5 hours into the download, I get a "download failed: server has reset" and I have to start the WHOLE damn thing over again! HURR-F***ING-RAY! after my 1000th failed attempt, I decide to get a download manager. I have to go find, download, and install that. I run it, and it goes apeshit because the download server doesnt support resumed downloads, meanwhile the god damned DL manager is hacking my registry and hijacking my personnal info and sending it to some god damned company that sells peoples souls for 5 cents a dozen to every junk mail company in existance. This whole time im being spamned with pop-ups, and im jamming my mouse down my throat to end my misery. By the time I actually get the god damned File, like 3 days later, I dont want to play anymore. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif'><!--endemo-->
IM sorry, Im ranting.
In a nutshell, Steam's auto download function is basically a "Bypass the ****" feature with insaine speed built in. auto-updating rocks in Steam just like it rocks in Blizzard titles, MMORPG's, Windows updater, the automatic updater on your virus scan, NWN, and just about any other NON-piece of crap software.
But, then again, maybe convenient and simple automated downloads are overrated. I mean, you have to hit the "OK" button when its done. Thats way lame!

I'm sure there are more pros and cons for both sides, but these are all I can think of at the moment.

a) Steam is slower than WON.
-> On WON: choose server, double-click, play.
-> On Steam: check updates, update (which takes ages), choose game, start game, choose server, play.
b) Steam updates = mandatory, via some bloody server in middle of nowhere (at the other side of the ocean <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ) <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

OMG ! darnit ! VALVE IS IMPROVING THE GAME ! WHAT ARE THEY THINKING ? DAMN THEM !
Seriously, the updates don't take long at all. 1 - 3 minutes, everyone can spend that much time, since you are most likely about to play for a couple of hours anyway. And you don't have to check for any upgrades, Steam does it all.

Gah?
Steam's servers are all over the US and Europe. And they got loads of unused capacity.
<a href='http://www.steampowered.com/status.html' target='_blank'>Steam Content Server Status Page </a>(right now not working though.)
I would never go back to WON, despite it makes some mods take a crap load of time to load. One specific one takes 2-3 minutes to start a server, if I remember correctly.
The only ones that hate steam are the ones that can't get it to work. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

1. My right click menu is fine, must be something on your end. Reinstall the whole thing, that might help.
2. Never heard of that. Reinstall might help.
3. The crashes on map change - *sigh* I think I mentioned that often enough in this thread - ARE CAUSED BY NS
4. Friends List - Options - Edit Profile - Sounds. There you go.
5. My upgrades go fast. Must be something on your end. 56k ?
5. There is CD for Steam (if you are talking about Cheating-Death).
6. Just sad. Put it on autostart and there ya go.
i have cable i-net
it's stupid to keep things on auto start becuase it all adds up and eats your memory (and yes i have enough ram 512 DDR)
and it's not that i can't deal with anyone of these problems its that there are so many problems
sigh...
did you ever play a steam supported mod on steam?
i dont think so.
because if you did, you would have realized that those crashes that boot everyone only appear to be happening with NS.
from that you can deduct that it is a bug on NS, since the 2.01 version of NS that runs on steam is a ns steam <b>beta</b>.
I am tired of hearing people say 'steam sucks' and 'steamed' after every random kick, without thinking even a little bit about what they are saying.
since i got steam, which was in spring 2003, i barely had any problems with it, and those that occured were either being fixed by valve, or i could fix them myself with 5-10 minutes of google research.
most of the time, its just the user who's unable to solve the problems himself.

people just do it to rally support for themselves when they have nothing else to say, like for example "he's not hacking man no one hacks," or like when a comic on stage suddenly runs out of material, he'll think of the city and name the city's baseball/basketball/football/etc team and say somthing like "ALRIGHT NEW YORK!! HOW 'BOUT THEM YANKEES!" to rally support for a popular subject. Steam-hating is very much in vogue, and bashing it is simply the cool thing to do. it will pass in time
oh yeah and responding to "when will 3.0 be released" with "when it's done"
But of course, the version of NS thats out there wasn't -made- for steam
So wait for NS 3.0 which is made for steam, and i'm sure it will have the same benefits <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
amen my brother. amen.
I dont mean to be a jerk, I just am.....
