ATi Radion 9800 Pro because I had the cash at the time and I was on a meesly G Force 2.

Id recomend it with prices falling you should be able to get it between £200-£270

Me? Winfast Geforce 4 Ti4200. I like it. I still like it. Why did I get it? Some of my friends had them and said they were good. I might change to a Radeon depending on how Half Life 2 & Doom 3 fare on my current card.

I personally prefer getting All in Wonder than paying 50 bucks more for a gift voucher for a $50 game and lose AiW capacities.

Yeah, well if you get the ASUS version for only a few bucks more you get a better cooled card AND all the AIW stuff.

No, but alot of cases side will come off without even needing a screwdriver. It will be the brownish slot above the white slots.

BTW. I'm getting a 9800XT soon and I want to know whether I have 8x AGP or 4x. How could I find out and are the benefits really that much. I've heard things both ways about 8x Slots from hardly helping at all to being a complete godsend.

I've got a GeForce FX 5200. It was cheap.

I was running a GeForce 2MX so i figured anything was an improvement over it, and for a card that cost around $50, that's not too bad really.

I'm also in the market for a second card (for outputting a seperate device) so does anyone have any ideas as to what would be a good suggestion for a PCI card, since my AGP is full.

Lets make ALL our cards a little faster, hm?

Okie dokey, get to your BIOS screen and put your AGPP mode at 4x

Set the AGP aperature size to exactly half of your system ram

make sure settings like AGP fast write and AGP master WS Write/Read are set to enabled

If you have a good card look for the Video Memory Cache setting and change it to USWC

Disable obselete functions, eg. BIOS shadow abd Video Bios Cache Settings (unless you play graphically intensive dos games)

    Dude I saw a 9600XT in a Best Buy catalogue for 199$

And I buy most of my computer parts on newegg.com cereal, cheap prices and they deliver really fast (Across the Country in 2 Days. And no, I always get the worst shipping because I'm poor) I'm getting a 9800XT and the ASUS one was like 20-30$ more and it has a second fan, a copper heatsink, and all the AIW capabilities.

AGP should be 4x and not 8x? and AGP aperature should be 512 megs? or by system ram do you mean card ram? and in that case, it shouldn't be set to total card ram (like 128)?

    /me is a confused newb.

Same here in 128mb flavour. Nice mix of price vrs performance. Is coming up for 1 year old, I will probably think about upgrading to an ATI type card later next year. Am waiting to find out how Halflife 2 runs.

Your right about the 8x thing disco, it was a typo by me.
  • ElderwyrmElderwyrm Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15296Members
You can't just go in there and change AGP settings, your card AND AGP slot have to support 8x or you wont' get the benefits.

No. Video Memory Aperture is how much system memory your video card can use, once its on-board supply runs out. If you have a decent amount of memory on your card, just leave it set to 64 or 32MB. It's unlikely the card will use enough textures to go into sysmem. Some cards can error if you have them set to an equal amount, or half-amount (meaning setting it to 128MB on a 128MB card, or 64MB on a 128MB card).

As well, Fast Write mode is a negligible speed boost when running at anything over AGP 1x. And it can cause stability issues on a lot of machines. I'd recommend turning it off.

BIOS shadow I leave on as it's a safety measure... it does affect more than DOS games, in other words. Though you can tweak it to precisely match your card's profile, if it takes up a smaller footprint than the default.
'Video Bios Cache Settings' I've never seen in a BIOS. Perhaps on a board with an integrated video card, but nothing on any decent board I've used. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
