What? Do you mean that the team would suck if I didn't weld?

yes:P
You *are* backing them up though! You're making sure they have a place to go to for their upgrades, where they can safely respawn in (well, until you're about to be defeated anyway) and giving them someone to help defend the vital structures to take down hives.
See yourself more as a medic. If anyone has a problem with that, then it's their problem. The game is about teamwork and this goes further than just a bunch full of Rambos.

On our server, being assigned base guard is one of the highest honors a comm can bestow on a marine. Not always, but often.. it is the most important role a marine can play. It requires skill, dedication, focus, and patience in surprisingly the same manner that the other marine roles do.

[EDIT]: now that I have my contacts in I can read his sig. NM.
Defending's part of your job, d00d. Anyone who calls you a camper is an idiot <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Same here - including my earlier role playing days. No matter which game it was, I normally took the healer role. Even when I used to LARP, I took some healing ability (UKers, who know the LARP system "Realm", will know that Supernaturalists were useless until later levels, spending points on abilities rather than armour and weapons, so the ability to at least heal yourself, and your team, was an important pick to take from the Healer skills). This made me one of the most sort after characters because I did the job well because I knew how to keep the fighters and spell casters alive which, in turn, meant that I was also defended and kept alive.
You are doing the same. But, as pointed out by others, there are occasions when you will have leave the base to complete some task. However, if you help defend your team, because of the skills you have, they should see that (those who actually look at the teamwork from others rather than only see their own achievements) and help defend you with their skills.
Good luck - and I hope to see your skills some day.
PS: One thing I should hasten to add is that if you intend to be a maintenance guy, it's important to treat any place your team has a phase gate to as a part of your main base. Make regular patrol checks there when nothing is happening in 'rine start. You're often going to be the only eyes any place that doesn't have extensive turret cover has.
Dude, I'd totally say the first. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Heh. Well, yeah, some of them do. I know when I'm in the chair I do, unless the guy doing that is A) an idiot or B) directly contradicting me. (See A in 90% of cases.) It's hard for me to do both planning and the working of the interface once things get hot and panicked. I usually try to set a general direction, and let my guys down in the pit set the actual pace.
PS: Check out the PS in the last post, if you haven't already.
