Google Deskbar

<div class="IPBDescription">Even cooler than Google toolbar</div> Well, Google has done it again:

<a href='http://toolbar.google.com/deskbar/' target='_blank'>Google Deskbar</a>

Now you can run a minibrowser off your taskbar and do searches without ever loading your main browser. Try it and see, I'm already addicted to the functionality of it and CTRL-D. 480K of memory usage and 0 CPU. Frickin' awesome stuff these guys make.

And if you are not already a <a href='http://toolbar.google.com/' target='_blank'>google toolbar</a> user, you outta be. Punk!

<s>Oooh, cool stuff. But it's another bit of clutter, i use Firebird's google search field, it's pretty much as handy.</s>

    I retract the previous statement, i'm now using it. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I don't like the little binoculars thing though, it looks pretty crappy with my taskbar colour scheme... oh well. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Great stuff. But why does "Im feeling lucky" use the default browser as opposed to the minibrowser?

that is the only thing i have against it

edit: btw, I think it uses IE, but Im not 100% sure.

Let's hope it's safer than the Toolbar s:p
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
There's nothing unsafe about toolbar, unless you say 'yes, please give me spyware' like a non-smart person. Both toolbar and deskbar prompt very clearly about privacy.

All browsers can CTRL + N and do search, not just opera. This app is designed to not need a browser running at all. Why on earth would be we be using it otherwise. Sheesh, I am so never having kids, as I'd be arrested for beating sense into them daily...

Good find, but I'll stick with the toolbar, I don't like things cluttering up my Taskbar. Besides, i have big rubber buttons on the top of my keyboard that launch my favorite sites. Thus I really have no problem with the toolbar.

i dont undersand wanting clutter on your taskbar. i have a oneclick IE button that goes to google and loads in about 0.45 seconds, works pretty well... and since the quickstart toolbar is a part of windows the effective cpu usage and memory usage is zero, right?

why doesn't anyone want to send their 'aggregate information' to google? you love their products but don't want to send a tiny bit of information to them as payment? if I promoted warez on this forum, I'd be modded, locked, and quartered, but no one has a problem with taking google's software and turning off the only part of it that makes it profitable for them to make such software... and these are the good people at google -- I'm sure their 'spyware' isn't the kind that's going to hijack your browser and send you 1500 pr0n pop-ups...

And that's great for you. Some of us are on workstations at the office though and have 10-15 high CPU usage apps running on older hardware and can't be waiting 30-45 seconds to start IE all the time, or have it open all the time, as it impedes other stuff. No one is ordering you to do this. It was offered as a service. If you don't like it, don't use it.

I really don't see the point of this in my case. My homepage is google and it's a single click away. I can see that it would be useful in a case like MonsE's but... myeh.

I would consider installing the google toolbar. How good is it's pop-up blocking doohicky?

Pretty good. I only get the really sophisticated popups these days, like the Flash ones. Everything else goes to teh bit bucket.

yet another piece of evidence that google does absolutely everything right.
  • DiscoZombieDiscoZombie Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18951Members
I thought the google toolbar blocked too many popups to be useful... for instance, in these forums, if you click on a link in someone's post, google would block it... I know there's a workaround -- middle-clicking or shift-clicking or something -- but I don't get any real problem pop-ups, since I'm not big on pr0n and warez sites, and I can alt-f4 in a split second anyway. The terminate and stay resident portion of Spybot is all I need to kill ads anyway.
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I doesn't block any links when I click on a user's posted URL. That's no different than any other normal HTML web link. And if you love popups, just hold down CTRL <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> .
