back in the day a company invisioned a network of satellites that would give global coverage everywhere, and hence the iridium network was born [the network is called iridium becuase the atomic number for it is 77 and they launced 77 satelites]
These satellites bounce sunlight off there reflectors and become very very bright for a decent amount of time, and you could have been passing over you in a direction that was head on, therefore it would have appeared to not move, they fade out really fast after they flare up

go to heavens-above and put in your area location and this site will give you a list of all the objects that pass over and are visible, including the iridums
and since I'm a good little boy I bring links that prove what I say

With only a normal brightness of +6 magnitude (binoculars are useful to spot it), occasionally some of the Iridium satellites provide reflective flares/glints of magnitude (-)8. For comparison, Venus can be as bright as magnitude (-)4.9, thus reflections can be up to 30 times brighter than Venus. The flares/glints can last anywhere from 5 to 20 seconds before the satellite once again becomes almost invisible to the naked eye. Some flares have been observed during the daylight hours which is very unusual for reflective glares from satellites. Knowing where to look to observe these flares during the daylight hours is essential.

3000 years ago, cows were free and wild. They lived togetther, happy. Until one day, an evil man caught the cows. Byby cows were seperated from there mama-cows (*sniff*) and they were all put into stables. The cows were very unhappy about this and so, on night, they all cried out together. It was a terrible noise, making the head of the evil man explode. Now the cows were free again, and happy. But tehs econd before his death, the evil man cursed the cows, he predicted a much much more brutal and evil man to come in 3000 years. The light you saw was this evil man's spacecraft, because he is an evil cow eating alien. Now I have to go and warn all cows. I like cows

Hey, I've actually seen something like that myself. Me and my parents were driving somewhere in the car and I see this bright star. I tell my mother to look at it and point without taking my eyes from it. But my mother doesn't see anything so i move my eyes to see if she's looking in the right direction, and when I look back the bright thing is gone. Really spooky.

It could be a submarine MIRV. Subs launch them, it flies into space and breaks it self into 10 other smaller missles and homes in on it's target. The part when it break it self down might be what you saw.

about 2 years ago when i lived in Michigan, I was lout on the fourth of july with some friends ont he beach, I was looking out over Lake Michigan, all of a sudden I see a bright glint, I stare at it real hard and its 2 spheres connected with a real thin tube, it shoots to the left, then the right, then flies straight up.
