Voice communication

A tactical advantage
Well, I just recently got my microphone to work, and boy is it great! I just love arranging tactics, assaults, and other stuff with my voice. It's soooo much easier than using the keyboard. And that's an understatement.

But there are a couple things I'm thinking of. How many here are going to have their microphones hooked up? I will always have mine hooked up in Natural Selection, so I can try to act like a bad-### while gunning down aliens and dying. That and I want to be able to alert my team quickly. It's really come in handy when, in Counterstrike, I see the enemy training his sights on us, and my team is about to run in.

You just can't afford to lose a couple of men while you type out "look out theres sniper". So instead, shout "Take cover, enemy sniper ahead, trained on that corner!"

Really great. So if you can, please hook up your microphone. It will be a great ease off the pressure during firefights and when you need to warn your team quickly.

And, you can say cool phrases like "Roger that", "Foxtrot-Bravo", "Affirmative", and "Where's my Wing-Alpha-Foxtrot-Foxtrot-Long-Echo?"

I have two questions now:

1) Will voice communication be in NS? How will it work when Marines use it? Will the whole team hear it? Or will it be shouted?

2) Will the aliens have voice comm? If so, how will it work? Will they broadcast it to the team? I haven't really heard of squad-based-tactical alien combat, but how will it work, if any?

It'll work like any other mod (as far as I'm aware). Your whole team hears it, but the other team doesn't. Same for aliens and marines.

While it certainly helps, aliens and ground troops can make do without voice comm. But a microphone is all but required for a successful commander. While it can still sometimes work if you're lucky, it is 10,000 times better to have a commander who can tell you what to do rather than waste precious time that you don't have to type out something trivial, like saying he just dropped ammo, or needs you to build something.

SBV Commander: Pardon me old chap, but would you mind deploying that seige turret in the enemy base old boy?

    Marine 1: Huh?

SBV: Build the turret in the base.

    Marine 1: Huh?

SBV: BUILD THE DAMN TURRET AT THE WAYPOINT!

Marine 1: Lo mucho siento, no hablo ingles...

SBV: *sigh*, can anyone build that turret?

    Marine 2: Was du Spreken?

    *SBV Dropped.

Voice Com ain't that great. Whenever I play DOD I can never hear the people using voice com, clearly. However, there was this one player that I could hear perfectly. He was using a expensive noise canceling mic.
  • DunsbyDunsby Join Date: 2002-08-01 Member: 1042Awaiting Authorization
How the hell does that work!! if it cancels noise it would cancel his voice

Also some other people with mics have like a fuzzy background, so sometimes you cant hear them properly.

No, some mic's have a built in range of frequencies that they allow, so pretty much all non-human voice sounds are omitted. Allowing much clarity.

If you wanna hear what you sound like SBV, try:

    voice_loopback 1 in the console.

Voicecom makes ns 50 times better, i suggest everyone use it, it's MUCH better to get organized with, hence NS's nature.

i have a noise canceling mic that works perfectly, but it just died, but it only cost me 7$, lol. P.S. I use my mic in all half life mods.

Same here... argh... damn dilated eyes....

Erm... what was I saying? Oh yes. Voice communication makes many team-games soooo much better. It's so fun to coordinate. Having your teammate reply just makes you smile.

I say if there's a couple people with voice comm, the squad leader should use it most. Like me. If I were leading a squad of Marines, I'd use the voice comm a lot, to issue orders, or to pass on orders from the commander.

Which gives me an idea. How about in each game, we form squads? Like, a squad of 3-5 that attacks or something. Squads can help make the game easier.... except when one player dies and you have to wait for him.

When I run the voice utility thingy for HL, I test record and it comes out incoherent and broken. =(

I would love to use voice instead of Keyboard... But I dunno how to correct my Mic situation...

Yep, I've had a few people yell at me for reporting all enemy movments on my Voice Comm (I just ignore or mute them) but I've also ended up setting up a winning tactic that I wouldn't of had time to type out.

I love it and will be making\responding to all my requests with it.

I just registered on to these forums, but have followed this mod for a long long time.It looks like NS is shaping up to be a nice community kind of like the way DoD did before release. Anyway..

If you need tips on tweaking your pc for your voice communication try this link PHL help mailbag

You might need a new sound card. My mic didn't work until I got a new sound card, strangely enough.... but then again, it isn't so strange.

Screw those people yelling at you. You don't have to report every single movement, just only when it's important... like...

    "Enemy at bombsite alpha!"
    "Enemy spotted in trainyard alpha!"
"Enemy sniper trained on the door!"
    "Throw a grenade in there!"
    "Detpack the enemy tunnel."
    "The flag is outgoing through..."
    "Incoming to the flag..."
    "Build a sentry..."
    "Plant the bomb..."
    "Grenade out!"
    [Acknowledging orders]
    "Walk slowly, move quiet."
    "Attach supressors."

And stuff like that. Also, you can use it when you spot enemies, if you want...

That's basicly what I do, plus initial estimates at where their defences are or where they're attacking and with how many.

Howdy there Mr. R. Ed! (Sorry, I just thought you had interesting initials, so to speak...). Anyway, welcome to the forums.

I was very pleased to see that your first post was to help someone else out. Such people as you seem to be are always welcome, and we're glad to have another friendly voice (No pun intended...) added to the NS community...

I agree. What a cool guy! Usually I only join forums when I really need to ask a question, and then I keep posting out of boredom.
