PS you missed my point, all this crap about hockey being bad and not making money is perpetuated by the owners to keep the league from making changes to the way money is handled. I think there IS room for improvement, but it should not be spurred by this nonsense. Sakic is only making 4.75 mil per year, and I'm sure that’s why he is whining.

Ok, so rant over AGAIN. The average hockey score 10 years ago was 8 points per game. It is now 5 points per game. That is a huge drop, and no matter what you might think, knowing that there is very little possibility of anything ever happening in a game is going to affect its popularity. BigD points out the Neutral Zone trap as being the Zone of the NHL, and he's right. It (and tactics like it) have ruined the game. I'd like to hear more suggestions about what people would do to make it be more like the years of Bret and Gordie and Wayne and Mario (and my boys, Chelios and Roenick). What people don't seem to realize is that the NHL is 250 million bucks in the hole this year, and it's quite possible that they will simply go bankrupt and vanish next year. Then hockey will die as a sport outside of Canada and other frozen wasteland countries and end up in the 'WTH is that?' list in the winter olympics along with louge and curling. I doubt anyone wants that, even the SunnyDeions in here.

Funny that this "Selanne" recommends reducing the amount of padding for the goalie. I was thinking they could try increasing the amount or quality of safety gear for all [edit]or at least some[/edit] players to allow for the kind of checking that really gets viewer interest without resulting in as many fights on ice over whether a player was overdoing it.

I've never been to an NHL game. I do watch the Wings on occasion though. But I couldn't really get into the heart of the game.
We do have an American Hockey League team in my city. I've been to a number of their games and they're quite fun. The seats are much closer to the ice, even on the second level.* The fans still get into the games and there's plenty of fights I did a quick check of our team's recent games and it appears the average scoring is around 2 goals per period. That's pretty good I'd say considering it's hockey.
I wonder if the lower edge in NHL games could have anything to do with the fans moving on to other things. Like, NASCAR for example. Huge surge of fans over the last few years. Maybe the fans have just switch obsessions.
* Coolest thing I ever saw was at a Griffins game: Compressed air cannon that fires 6" Blimpie subs and T-shirts across the entire arena! I was in awe.
Im surprised no one has tried to start an 'Xtreme' Hockey League thats faster paced and such.
Anyone notice that the 2 most popular sports, football and basketball, each have point systems which give greater rewards for better strategy/skill?
Football you have touchdowns and fieldgoals, both take different strategy and reward points in accord with their difficulty. Basketball gives more points for higher risk based on distance from the basket.
Then you look at sports that have suffered in the past few years and there isnt a point/risk reward system. It would be interesting to see how a hockey game would go if rules were loosened up and more points were given for the distance or area that a shot was scored from.
To be the stereotypical one here, the reason hockey isn't exciting anymore is because we dont take it as seriously as we do football or baseball. At least here in the US this is true unlike the ever growing popularity for it in Canada. If we took it more seriously it'd be a lot more hardcore on the viewer's and player's side. Unlike golf, that is one game you can never spice up for the viewer... gotta play it or its the worst.
The only changes that I feel can be made to "spice" up the game are already being discussed. Removing the second ref would be a good start. As mentioned above, Bevel or Slant the posts so more shots go in off the post.
They’ve already moved up the goal line, created much more skating room behind the net.
Another possibility would be to eliminate the point scored for a Regulation Time Tie, that would bring the bar down on who makes it into the playoffs and possibly spur some more aggressive hockey.
But in general I don’t agree with the statement that hockey has gotten boring, its simply changed. I stand by my point, defensive play is the natural evolution of the game. Fore Checking is way stronger than it has ever been, and play in the neutral zone is insane compared to 20 years ago. There simply isn’t room to generate the kind of plays you saw when you were younger Monse.
Maybe if they got rid of the red line it would open up for more passing in the neutral zone, but it didn’t seem to make too much of a difference in the winter games (they played with no red line, but the cherry picking was down to a minimum)
Another change could be to make it a 4 on 4 game instead of 5 on 5 but that would fundamentally alter hockey and I doubt anyone would go for that.
I agree with you Grey in a lot of your points. But I'd rather have the 'younger MonsE' days of Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe scoring rather than the modern days of no one scoring. Defense is swell. It's also boring to me, and apparently to all those former NHL fans staying away in droves.
Is it better to do nothing and watch the league die? Maybe it is, actually, and then something better can be reborn from it in a decade or two...
