BSODs make me cry.
Ok, so lately my comp has been crashing for no reason I can see. I'll leave it alone for a few hours and when I come back it'll be in a blue screen. This doesn't happen on a regular basis either, and it's only happened once when I was actually AT the computer. Just now, when I was playing around with the litte doot sounds that Homestar Runner makes when you put the mouse over the shirts at the homestarrunner.com store, it just died, I wrote down what it said. It said that the problem appeared to be in "win32k.sys" and that it was a "page fualt in nonpaged area"

So basically I'm asking if anyone knows 1)exactly what this error means, and 2)what the heck could cause it

I had those problems. I looked it up and it said the page fault problem was caused dodgy drivers or something along those lines. Turned to actually be a hardware fault.

I don't like the sound of the words "Hardware fault" at all.

Are you running 2k? xp? try updating your drivers or looking for shared IRQ's (Shared irq's suck)

I've only had 2 BSOD's ever with windows XP. One was intentional, and one was when my graphics drivers had a total neurotic meltdown.

Usually that can be caused by 'dirty' RAM. When's the last time you ran a tester over your memory?

(Of course, this is one reason I love running under Linux... no unintelligible BSODs)

yeah, to me it sounds like the problem may be either bad ram, or a bad windows installation.

How do you tell? I think I may be a victim of "bad ram".

Although i'll admit my computer hasn't crashed in two days now, which is a real achievement.

GRRRR it just did it again! I went downstairs, grabbed a hot dog and when I came back there was a BSOD! This time a "IRQL not less or equal" error caused by "usbport.sys" GRRRR!!!

Virus scan? I don't think XP even has a blue screen of death, never got one so far :\.

I had that a while ago. Kept getting blue screens every now and then.
Ran a RAM test and found out thats where the prob is.
I just went to the (dreaded) shop and they cave me a new one for free.
Never had one PC crash thereafter

do your programs also just close all of a sudden? (error report box pops up)

I think its probably due to bad RAM... I had the same problem and used this little app:
    http://www.memtest86.com

Just ran memtest, looks like my RAM is the problem after all. Could be worse I guess, but now I gotta take some of my Christmas shopping money and but some RAM. Poo.

It does have a BSOD. You just have to set it up to display one instead of just automatically turning off.
