Well, a fading .gif is quite hard as you can only pick 1 transparent colour. I'd just put whatever colour the background is you're putting the .gif into on a new layer behind the fade. (Like that made any sense).

what i did was;
image > RGB colours
image > resize
image > index colours
you lose the fade effect but if you index b4 rezising then you loose quality and definition.
