why are we taking a step BACK :s
i have watched countless news reports... and plenty of other things.... but like... i still dont get why they are killing off concorde, one reason i was told is that it is a fuel hog and like too pricey... people PAY for it.. so like why get rid of it if people are still willing to pay..

personally one of my lifelong dreams was to cross the atlantic in 3 hours... i always wanted to go supersonic.. and so i am crushed they have actually done away with it.

can anyone else attempt to explain this backtrack in evolution? lets invent Supersonic jets... then take them away again cos they may be pricey :s

It's only a matter of time before the create the next gen comercial aircraft. Soon we will all be blasted into space, orbit to our destination then drop out of the sky in a ball of fire to land safely in only half an hour in total.

Hrmm.. well... it is possible that a new supersonic commercial plane will be built... but I don't see it happening anywhere near... say 5-7 years minimum before another one rolls out... don't think any airline will be willing to take the economic risk of actully building one around now.

I think it's time to make that career move to building your own!

All you need is an empty washing up bottle, some cardboad cereal boxes and some sticky back plastic.....

i've seen designs for the concord II a few years ago, a few intresting concepts, rather intresting one with the cockpit at the back of the aircraft...

i think they were thinking about going back to rotor based aircraft but powered by electric instead of fuel, or powercells, much more efficent than the fuel guzzling jet craft we have now...

think i saw it on tomorow's world or something :/

then again, they were predicting we'll all be wearing silver suits.. not sure how much of their word i would be willing to take..

The newscasts Ive seen suggest that people dont pay for it anymore....at least not enough to justify the cost of operating it.

i know it is pathetic.. but yeah ever since i was a kid.. the planes with the pointy noses always intrigued me...

The old planes are becoming harder, and more expensive to maintain. To the point where the fares can no longer pay them off. It's becoming a safety hazard, and they needed to go.

I was reading an old issue of Pop Sci (not that old, two months old maybe) and they had a big article on the future of flight. They talked with the people that made the Concord and other plane designers from todays big companies and from what I read I can ashure you Super-Sonic flight is far from over.

Problem with the concorde was that it needed a very long runway to take off and land. Usually, the time saved on the actual flight was lost again in getting to and from the suitable airports. It was little more than a novelty, the tickets were ridiculously expensive, it guzzled fuel like nothing else (yeah, screw global warming and all that, just as long as corporate managers can fly supersonic), and the planes were falling apart with age. Not to mention the comparatively low cargo and passenger capacity. The entire thing was a PR stunt, a flashy "I wonder if we can pull this off"-idea, a prestige object. A toy if you want.

I think I saw that. It flys at a higher level in the atmosphere than the planes we have now and can get to Japan from Britain 45 minutes.

In the grand scheme of things, I would think that the concorde contributes very little to the pollution associated with global warming.

Another problem associated with all supersonic aircraft is the sonic boom. For this reason, the concorde has to slow to subsonic for the beginnings and ends of it's trip when it nears land.

Super-cruising business jets are, IMO, a much more viable solution. I designed one to get across the atlantic, but it's just for asthetics, I don't know enough about aircraft engineering to say whether or not it could really achieve super-cruise (supercruise is when you exceed mach 1 "dry", aka without using your afterburners). Currently, only the F-22 raptor can supercruise IIRC, and there are only a few in existance (not even in service yet as I understand it)

    http://www.geocities.com/radiationhazard/ssbj.htm

Another possible option is ram/scramjets which are in development.

Yet another possible option is a small craft that skips along earths atmosphere and allows you to get from, say, new york to tokyo in a very short time. The problem of this would be the tremendous expense of getting said craft into near low earth orbit. While it would definately get you there quick, it would be extremely expensive.

after the first concorde blew up, not too many people were getting back in line to ride the second one........... would you?

Well how many 747's crashed? I'm sure that even if you compare in proportion, normal jumbos have at least as much failures. Prior to that one accident, the Concorde was the safest transport ever, and I'd think it still is.

Not to mention that the accident wasn't entirely due to a fault of the plane itself, but a piece of scrap metal from another plane hitting its fuel tanks. That's why they adressed the problem after.

I wanted to go Super Sonic after I hear the "Sonic Boom" intro theme to Sonic CD. ~_^

Actually, as for 747's, while a greater number of these have crashed, the Concorde certainly wins in percent (I don't have a number handy, but I'd say that there's less than a hundred Concordes in existence. One has crashed. That's well over one percent). Concordantly (pun intended), the Concorde can now be viewed as "less safe" than the 747 if one is so inclined, based on accident record.
