Cant do much for the installed programs except uninstall and reinstall on the D drive. You can copy and paste all your music/movies/pictures though.

will this take out MB from the C drive?, oh and theres 1 big problem, 76% of CZ is installed on my Cdrive somewhere, its not in a folder, or fiels, i cant find it AND theres no option to uninstall because it couldnt finish installing, so i could at least have 10% of my Cdrive free, now i have 1%

btw, steam is taking ALOT i mean ALOT of the space so how do i move it? make a Program Files folder in my D drive and put Steam folder in there?

Normally installers (at least new ones) uninstall already installed files if there was an error installing the program.

Uninstall CZ off your C Drive.

Defrag C+D drive.

Reinstall CZ on D drive.

BTW i heard CZ was crap...

First of all, if CZ was a good program, it would check to make sure you had the necessary disk space to begin with, which it obviously didn't do.

If there was not enough space to finish installing the game, the installer should have deleted the files that were installed.

Uninstall all unnecessary programs and reinstall them to your D drive. Also move all of your media over. Try running a disk cleanup on the C drive by going to My Computer, right clicking the C drive, selecting properties, and clicking the Drive Cleanup button. This should remove any temporary internet files, temporary install files and things of that nature (freed up over 400 MB on my C drive once).

If all else fails, repent and reformat.

Partitions are simply one hard drive (physcial unit) sliced up into smaller segments. That means if you have a 40 GB disk, you can slice it up in any way you want. You can have only one partition large 40GB or two of them, large 20 both or just any other combination you want.

I'm also not sure if you're getting the disk and partition terms right. You said you have two disks, C and D, but I think you have only one with two partitions, those being C and D.

System partion is the partion of your HDD which contains Windows/Linux/or what ever O/S you are using.

If your computer is partioned like this, i recommend you do.

I have one 120gb partioned into :

C drive (Windows partion. 8 gb)

D drive (Games/apps 80gb)

E drive (downloads, other stuff 32gb)
• uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
Also, partitions are like floodgates. If something corrupts your windows install, or the partition fails, everything on C: can easilly be replaced, if you have nothing but drivers and system files on it.

At least he *has* a partition. God I can't stand people with one 60 gb C: drive, and about 21,000 icons on their desktop for 'AOL TRIAL OFFER' and crap like that.

well i do PHYSICALLY have 2 HD's in my tower, (top 1 is C drive, 1 under that is D), so when i copy n paste my programs over do i delte the ones in the C drive afterward?, btw jimmehs way of setting it up sounds pretty good for organization i might try that way

If you just copy and paste, you're making COPIES. You have to delete those files on the previous partition then...

so my D is a partition not a spereate hard drive? (b/c like i said i phisically have 2 HD's in my tower) =/

Diablus, how big are your drives?
• uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
Okay, either way you do it, between 6 and 10 gb for a C: drive is ideal. The real size depends on how much RAM you have. If you have a lot of RAM, you have a larger pagefile, and therefore will need more C: space.

Second: Don't just cut-paste programs. They're tied into the registry as being located at... pretend... 1943 C Drive Blvd. The registry will want to look there for the program but won't be able to find it. Now for some programs this won't have an effect. Other programs depend on the registry for information (Adboe Photoshop, for example), and won't work properly. Generally it's best to just reinstall everything over. This is also much 'cleaner'.

Finally: Be sure to stick to your organization system. My C: drive has:

Windows XP
Drivers
Microsoft Office (Was an accident, but I don't mind)
Various system tools, like adAware, Norton, etc.

Also on my C: drive is my desktop. Anything you put on your desktop takes up C: space. I occasionally will dump things there for temporary storage.

So the end result is my C: drive is a throwaway drive. If I need to reinstall windows, I can safely and completely CLEANSE the drive with format.com, and loose nothing important

That's a good point. I don't use NTFS, and I'm not sure if the filesystem will reject the FAT32 like a bad kidney.

Hrmph, I dig the partition thing, I take it that it keeps the computer nice and speedy to keep the windows on one partition....I've got two drives, both 40 gigs each. C is just 40 gigs with xp, program files, music and downloads. The Other drive is installed games, purely.
I don't suppose there's a way to organize this system now short of reformatting. Then again, wouldn't mind. PC is running pretty sweet.
• JimmehJimmeh Join Date: 2003-08-24 Member: 20173Members, Constellation
I recommend you just format the two drives. Partion the C drive into two, one 5-10gb and another one with whatevers left (lets call this E drive)

Convert C, and E to NTFS.

Install your O/S (XP i presume) onto drive C (the 5-10gb one)

Install all required Apps into the E drive if its big enough.

Install all games/downloads onto drive D.

Or do whatever suits you, but you should definetly have some sort of file organization, and all your drives should be NTFS if you have alot of ram (at least 512mb).
• uranium_235uranium_235 Join Date: 2002-11-20 Member: 9478Banned
Music and downloads aren't in the registry, they can easilly be moved.

If you want to repartition WITHOUT reformatting the drive, use Partition Magic. It's a bit wonky (I somehow ended up with 8 gigs of 'phantom' drive space on mine, but somehow got rid of it eventually) but it lets you manage your drive perfectly.

I disagree.

I have a 20 gig system partition. On it goes windows, and all my utility programs (Office, MIRC, etc.), and I have no fear of it filling up, it's just impossible. I do have other partitions for Steam, data, downloads, games, music, etc.

I'm a die hard partition freak. Get Partitionmagic, it'll pay for itself

Ok, well, one thing to do is to delete your Windows restore points.

Do this by going to Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> DiskCleanup

Click on More Options. On the bottom is System Restore. Click the button marked clean up.

It easily deletes a gigabyte of data at least. Also remember to clean up other parts of your hard drive by deleting Temp files and by uninstalling programs/games that you don't use.

Hope this helps.

Also, don't forget you can change the default directory for installation, so you could put it on D:/

Not unless you plan to do a lot of partion juggling. I love it for being able to resize partitions and even move them to another drive.
• JimmehJimmeh Join Date: 2003-08-24 Member: 20173Members, Constellation
I have a "free" (if you know what i mean) version of Partion Magic, however i rarley use it because its tricky (well you have to do alot of dragging and its inaccurate) so i normally just do it "the old fashioned way"

However i recommend you get it if you've never partioned a drive before.

Backup any models/custom stuff you have in your steam folder, uninstall steam, then reinstall it on the D drive

Those were most probably the temporary files clogging up your system partition. Try changing the temporary folder's location to the partition that has more (enough) space. I have all the swap files on my I partition, which holds more than enough (system partition 5 GB, I partition - 40 GB).
