9600 Xt A Flop?

It's certainly better than the 9600 pro (by a small amount), and it is only $200.... but did it live up to the pre-release hype?

They said it was going to perform around the level of cards about twice its price. I knew this couldnt be true, so I figured it might be a little below the lines of a 9700 non pro. When I saw benchmarks I decided to stop waiting and coughed up extra cash for a Hercules 3D Propher 9700 Pro. Too bad the one they sent me had a capacitor that wasnt souldered on, and the heat sink wasnt attatched. Not to mention a bunch of the ram sinks were glued on about 4/5th of the way off of the chips. Needless to say I'm still waiting for those lazy **** I ordered from to give me an RMA number so I can send it back.

Actually, once ATi releases the drivers that enable the special functions on the XT. (They're not in the current Catalysts, I believe...) The card automatically overclocks. So once that feature is enabled, then yes. It will perform a lot better, depending on the cooling in your case. If it detects an overheat, it'll downclock itself. If it sees that it's still in the safe zone for temperature to overclock, it'll overclock itself.

    Aww, poor you.

I got mine from Crucial (in the UK) and it gives me much joy.

So don't blame ATI, blame the supplier.

*edit* Ironically I could have waited and payed much less for one though; I only bought it when I did because back then we all thought HL2 was coming out on the 30th..... *edit*

Where in that post did I say it was ATI's fault? Of course its the supplier.

When they said its supposed to beat cards twice its price they are kinda right.

Heard somewhere that overclocking it wise its one of the best cards you can get, and can almost perform as well as the 9800.

Kinda like the fact that the Duron 1.8ghz is the best value AMD chip you can get, as you can overclock it to 2.5ghz and no other AMD is that overclockable

Uh not really. Considering its still running 128 bit interface with only four pixel pipelines. Core and ram frequency only go so far.

But the point is that you shouldn't need to overclock it for it to live up to its claims!
If ATI promises it can do it, they should mean right-out-of-the-box!

The drivers they make for it do it automatically, you don't have to do a thing.

doesn't that mean that if your card dies because it was overheating they can't blame it on overclocking (breaking warranty) ?
