    Fuerat is 'to exist'.

    inibat can be 'enter' as in 'to enter a contest', or 'begin', something like that.

    ederat is 'to eat' or 'destroy'

    fuit is the same as fuerat.

    Quintus?

    Hmm...I don't remember that exact phrase, so you must be on something like unit 25 or up.

    Fuerat and fuit are To be, same as sum, esse, es. Just with weird participles.

    inibat = past tense of ineo. He was undertaking.

    Ederat = consume

    This is the website I used <a href='http://www.nd.edu/~archives/latin.htm' target='_blank'>Latin Dictionary/Translator</a>

    I'm gonna take a shot @ it, from what I remember:
    Because the journey Quintus was to be undertaking is long and difficult (My translation, with no notes)

    Journey because Quintus he was undertaking long and difficult to be (literal translation)

    thank you for the help and the link

    im still looking around for 'dative' and 'ablative' explanations, ive forgotten, because i am very much a 'educated guess from the context and significant words' kind of guy <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Quintus is the son of Caecilius, a patrician from the city of Pompeii who died when Vesuvius erupted. Quintus and Clemens escaped. Clemens and Quintus went to Alexandria where Quintus used his Roman money to set Clemens up in a shop and we find this all out while Clemens sits and eats with King Cogidubnus, leaders of the Regneses tribe in Roman England. Salvius tries to betray Cogidubnus by using the military, but because of Quintus he survives and...I rememeber it all...someone shoot me, now!

    My word! Do all Latin courses feature Quintus and his beggar family?

    That brings back the memories, I thankfully dropped Latin 4 years ago <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    any Latin courses using the Cambridge Latin books do...so yes, yes they do.

    The best part about Latin I was when the teacher had a very attractive girl read, "Melissa pleases Caecilius."

    Now normally I wouldn't laugh, but the way she said it, in a slightly erotic lisp...everyone was staring and laughing.

    you are owned!

    yea, if ya don't know the conjugations HOW do you understand it?

    fuerat is the perfect past "He had been"
    inibat looks like the the imperfect "He was going in"
    ederat "He had eaten" (perfect past)
    and fuit "He went" (perfect)

    Titus Cogidubnus defictus est.

    Man, you'll get nowhere in latin if you don't learn all the cases.

    <a href='http://omega.cohums.ohio-state.edu/latin/grammar/latin_cases_basic.htm' target='_blank'>http://omega.cohums.ohio-state.edu/latin/g...cases_basic.htm</a>

    Used that and a lot of other sites as a refresher. Bit late for you now, but it'll come in handy someday.

    It was so sad when Caecilius died in his house. Poor Cerberus, such a good dog. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Umm, Cereburus is the name of Caecilius's dog, which dies in the fire in Pompeii.

    Argus is Cogidubnus's or Salvius's I think.

    poor eediot.
