GeForce > Radeon atm for the Half Life engine, but whats MOST important is CPU and RAM.

You COULD always try this too:

    --------------------------------------------

    - Go to the Windows\System32 directory and look for your opengl.dll

If you're using a nvidia card the nvoglnt.dll is the right one.
For Ati cards it's the atioglxx.dll.
And for the rest the opengl32.dll.

    - copy that file to your ..\SteamApps\user@user.de\counter-strike\gldrv directory.

    - open the drvmap.txt in that directory and change the text to the following:

    Default Default
    gldrv/YOURFILENAME.dll OpenGL Driver

I've got a Radeon 9800 Pro with the latest drivers (Catalyst 4.3), and an Athlon 1800+ on Windows XP SP1 with 512 DDR RAM on a fresh disc format. I get solid 60 fps in OpenGL most of the time (which is fine for me) but in heavy areas it can drop to around 30, which is not acceptable. Vsync is enabled because I get frame tearing otherwise. Even when I crank it down to 640x480 it can dip to the 30s.

TRUFORM is always off, and when I downgrade to below Catalyst 3.8 or so I start getting a lot weirder problems than just an FPS drop.

I know my CPU is a bit on the low end as far as most CPUs go, but it seems like it should be fine to play NS. I've been thinking of upgrading to an Athlon 64 3000+ and getting a new motherboard. Would that help?

(edit) Tried Catalyst 3.9, did not help the problem. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Replaced my Gigabyte GA-7VRXP motherboard and Athlon XP 1800+ with a Gigabyte GA-K8VT800M Triton motherboard and an Athlon 64 3000+ CPU and the problem disappeared.

This is without changing my RAM, video card or any software on my HD.

Could someone get together a list of different things that may or may not work to get decent FPS on a Radeon... You can't blame anything but the card, maybe the drivers but I am running Cat 4.4, the very latest....

    I can get constant 330fps (developer 1) 1024 x 768 full gfx settings.

    470fps in 640 x 480 with lowest gfx settings...

    My setup:

    (CPU) AMD Athlon™ XP 3000+, 2171MHz, (512KB)
    (RAM) 1024MB (DDR PC2700)
    (GFX Card) RADEON 9800 PRO - 128MB (Omega 2.5.36b)
    (Display) 1024x768/32bit/100Hz

I could get around half that fps with my ti4800se.

I believe the HL engine is VERY dependant on RAM and also anything higher than 2xAA is lost on the engine.
