Mapping & Mr Universe

<div class="IPBDescription">What do these two things have in common?</div> G'day Guys and Gals

I bet your asking what the hell is this post on about¿

Well here it is. What do you do while compiling your maps when running vis and rad?

Do you sit and watch the screen waiting 10 mins for the thing to compile? Do you go and grab some food or a drink?

I have found a way to become Mr universe and map at the same time. When mapping i generally build a couple of rooms at once in separate files. Each one taking 6-10 full compiles before i get it right. Taking anywhere from 2-6 mins.

So how the Mr Universe?

Get your hands on a set of dumbells. Then every time you compile do a some wieghts.

By my calculations:

10 compiles X 6 mins X 1 month(30 days) average for building a map = Mr Universe in a month

either that or just sit on your rear end and watch some TV! <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Happy Mapping.... <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

PS: Let us know what you do while compiling? Or post some other suggestions <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I dont use my PC while compiling that way it can make full usef my processing bandwidth.

Heh, that's a good Idea. Now I just need to get some weights...

Actually, for a max-sized NS map, the rad compile can take two hours - or much much longer. The solution is to make fewer mistakes so you don't have to compile forever. The final compile of NS_Nothing was so complex the rad step brought Shodan to it's knees, you know. ^^

The guy got rid of shodan becuase he thought HL2 was coming out around the time, and it would cut compile times dramatically.

What exactly was Shodan? A Cray Supercomputer?

I sleep during compiling, because VIS in my old map needed 13 hours <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

BTW Shodan is AI from System Shock (best game ever)

Shodan was also some kind of high powered computer that I think MonsE (not sure who) was running remote compiles on. I never got a chance to look at the specifics of it, but it probably was a single (or double) p4 box with lots of ram used almost explicitly for compiling maps. Although if it was running a server version of windows it could have used up to four processors, uber compiling indeed. Anyways, it was taken down in expectation of hl2 and I imagine that it's original owner has loved using it so much that s/he doesn't want to put it back to that purpose.

Shodan was the evil A.I. in the games System Shock 1 & 2, it's short for Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network. As the game progresses (I need to dig it out of my heap of games and try it again, I lost interest rather quickly in it due to a somewhat cumbersome interface) It becomes evidently clear that SHODAN wants to kill off all the humans and become a god.

As for what I do when I compile... I build some more. =p I got two computers, so I build on one and save the maps on the other, and then I use Nems Batch thingy to compile the map while I continue to build on the other computer.

I generally spank it while I compile, then go to work.
