I'm getting around 100 choke in nearly every server. I talked to my ISP and they'd never heard this term 'choke' before. What is it?

EDIT: Congrats nublard you put it in the wrong forum <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

this should help you, its for CS, but the same terms and fixes apply

<a href='http://www.mfa-lan.net/rates.asp' target='_blank'>choke and loss, and how to fix them</a>

as I understand it choke is refering to choke points (ie you are attempting to send data out at X speed but some where on the route is forcing you to send em out slower)

100 choke is disgusting btw, you should get 0 (same for loss) anything regularly above that is actualy odd.

I have that problem occasionally (but when i do, it's constant for a few days, then dissapears for a few days etc). I'll just be playing, and for no reason (i can be in the middle of an intense firefight or just sitting under the hive), my loss and choke shoots to 100 (my internet is still on and everything).

    oh, right

if any one is not on broad band simply open up your net connection (start --> settings(if your not in xp) --> controll panel --> Network conections)

    and then disable QOSPacket schedular <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Like the reason? I find myself disabling it when I reformat, and I don't see a clear reason behind it other than adding a step to my spring cleaning

Hrm, I get really bad choke in NS and I'm considering disabling this QoS packet Scheduler. I go into my properties for my dialup connection but the checkbox for QoS is greyed out. I can uninstall it but not disable it. Will something bork up if I uninstall it completely?

    [TECH SUPPORT]

How's about, those who are interested look <a href='http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/qos.htm' target='_blank'>here</a>, and the rest simply acknowledge that if you don't know how to configure it, then overall it's probably hindering your performance rather than helping.

Note : If you <b>do</b> know, it can help. But only if you do.

    [/TECH SUPPORT]

Addendum : The perfomance increase by disabling QoS is highly variable. So if you get some uber jump of 10-15%, please don't get all & sundry to do it immediately.

yes, you can simply unistall it, it will not hurt anything <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    From what I understand:

It basicaly is a nifty little tool tht is suposed to deal with heavy network trafic, however it dosn't seem to play nicely with HL (and posibly other games)

it dosn't seem to have any effect on broadband.

And I for one don't feel like reading through a cisco page to lear why <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
