Wait wait wait WAIT a minute. You're arguing that oranges are messier to eat than apples? I like the taste of both fairly equally, but I almost never eat apples in favor of oranges, because apples are MUCH messier. Or at least stickier.
When I'm eatting an apple, the juice INEVITABLY drips down all over my hands, making them all sticky. With oranges, just peel it, seperate the wedges by hand, and pop each one in your mouth. No mess, all the deliciousness you can handle.
If you're going to argue that you can cut up an apple, you have to factor in convenience. I can peel an orange and eat it with my bare hands (preferably washed first, but that's another issue)... but in order to slice an apple, I need a cutting implement. And then either I'm stickk going to get my hands sticky, or I need a fork too, esspecially if I'm going to make use of the dip.
I will grant one thing in apple's favor though. Apple dips are fantastic. You can't really dip oranges in anything except sugar, and then only when you slice the orange.
Also, Orange Juice is clearly the greater beverage, lording over Apple Juice with it's refreshing taste. And who on earth would prefer apple juice to orange juice for breakfast?
For these choices I have to say apples are better because an apple that is served cold is more refreshing than an orange. Apples also have more class. You can't polish and orange on your shirt before biting into it, giving that delicious crisp sound that beckons the ladies to aid your every command.
But, I'm going to play the Banana card. Bananas are great because they are good warm or cold, and frozen. They are usefull as well, once finished with a banana you can place the peel on the ground and an unsuspecting passerby will slip and fly through the air resulting in hilarity!
Thus, apples and oranges both lose because mighty banana comes and gets eaten first.
[edit] I give the versatility award to apples actually...they can be turned into pipes during troubling times.

It was quite simply the best stuff I have ever tasted. All of you, before you die, you must drink unpasteurized apple cider. It is incredible.
You people have yet to address the fact that MOST ALL apples are either soft, bitter, or very tart. I want you to name the type of apple which is always VERY crisp, large, juicy, and SWEET that you all keep saying. Chances are most of you just lie and say 'apples taste like this, I know, it's the stereotypical apple and I eat 12 a day!'
I can go to the store right now and choose a random variety of apples and oranges. All the oranges will taste nearly the same and be slightly soft.
Some of the apples will be so tart you can hardly eat them. Some of the apples with be soft as a paperball. Some of the apples will just downright TASTE BAD. Come to think of it, I lived in CALIFORNIA and NEVER have had these 'perfect apples'. Washington apples? They're red, they're firm, they're crisp, but their flavor is NEVER consistant. Some will be sweet, some will be flavorless, some will be downright gross.
Baking apples? Oooh too bad they taste downright TERRIBLE when they're not BAKED. Furthermore, most have cinnimon or other spices that usually MASK said flavor.
You ever eaten an Apple Cobbler? Well gee, it uses apples that taste all right just PLAIN, but in the cobbler, they turn out very soft, limp, and generally flavorless.
Apple Juice? It's a bit more beyond taking a simple Gala Apple and squashing it flat, it too uses special apples that work differently.
So there's my challange: I want to know the name, texture, color, and... firmness of these so called Miracle Apples you all keep lying about eating every single day. I know I can name my oranges that have a sligthly firm inside every time, they taste great every time (Assume they're picked in season....), they're ORANGE... and they're called Navel Oranges.
So while we get our ORANGE, which is the same orange used in practically everything, you apples get to choose ONE TYPE of apple, and ONLY one type.

Macoun and Fortuna (I think? might be Fortune) apples are absolutely divine - slightly tart, mostly sweet, and extremely crispy without threatening to break your teeth. Gala (provided they are not overripe) is a light, crisp, sweet apple, though it's a little light on flavor.
I still prefer oranges, though. And bananas are ucky, as stated previously, for giving me tummy aches.

I was going to say apples, but then my fiancee did something with oranges that I didn't think was possible.
*looks at above sentance. I possibly could have phrased that better*
In any case, what she did was cut the top off two oranges, then scoop out all the insides. She then poared chocolate cake mixture into the hollowed out orange, poped the top back on with the aid of some toothpicks and then wrapped both oranges in aluminum foil. Baked for a short time then produced for eating.
Man, I was in heaven. If you've ever had jaffas it was just like that; the orange must have soaked into the cake or something. The cake itself was all moist and soft, with the tang or orange melding perfectly with the sweetness of the chocolate. Absolute bliss.
So oranges, and only for that reason. Wait, I guess orange juice as well. That stuff rocks <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I would like to say that the peach is far superior to the apple, the banana, or the orange. It's sweet, it's juicy, it can be used in a variety of delicious desserts, it tasted wonderful dipped in sugar, or in yoghurt.

Oranges > apples. Although you must peel an orange, they taste much better. With apples, you can only like a few varieties. For me, Fuji and Golden Delicious are DISGUSTING. I nearly throw up when I eat them. However, granny smith (and some other red kind) I like.
Oranges... you can't go wrong. Except for those kumquat things. Other than those, oranges are always yummy.
I rarely venture into the discussion forum, but this was such an important issue I felt it had to be discussed.
Unfortunatly I rarely, if ever, eat fruit on its own. I'm a big fan of orange juice though, and I must say that oranges pwn in that respect.
On the other hand, we have apple pie. Oh sure, you may get the occasion Rhubarb supporter, but when it comes down to it you can't beat apples for a good pie.
I would definatly consider myself an orangelist if only for that sweet sweet orange juice, but when it comes down to it I really can't eat an orange on its own. That gross fleshy stuff that tastes bad after you already swallowed the good bits... ugh.
As I said I am not a big fruit fan, but if I had to pick one fruit to live off forever, it would have to be the peach. No mess (the stone in the middle takes up very little space), tastes good and can be used in pies as well as with custard.... mmmmmm....

Orange juice is awesome no doubt, and apples punch a pack, especially the green-red hybrid, but there all good.
as a straight fruit i would have to vote Orange, its a wonderful fruit, with the only drawback being seeds, but the added benefit of my being able to gnaw on the skins all_day_long more than makes up for it.
however, after being processed, fresh Cider or Pai rapes the hell out of anything oranges can make.
Ouch, must i be non-partisan? No, i am third-party; Pineapples (no relation to apple) are the best.
I must disagree Nil IQ. 1) I find no "fleshy parts that taste bad" ... enlighten me? You mean tough pulp towards the top/bottom? Oranges don't have that; grapefruits do, but oranges don't. If you're talking about the membrane stuff in the middle... well, don't eat it. 2) Peaches are extremely messy! Where have you been?! Also if you leave an orange peel inside jar for a day, the citric smell will permeate. No longer then a day.
