Illegal Operation

<div class="IPBDescription">Very annoying thingy!</div> <b>Illegal Operation...</b>

ok. sorry if this is not a direct mapping question but its affecting what seems to be just my HL folder and Worldcraft.

When HL/VHE opens up..this message box comes up..and then my PC freezes...so I have to restart.

Surely this is not good for my PC..and the message is really bugging me.

Does anyone have any idea how this is caused or how it can be stopped.

I have windows 98..if it makes any difference.

    Virus scan,

I also recommend upgrading your operating system to 2000 or XP, its so much
    better on todays systems.

On Today's systems yes, how old is your computer, do you have 98 Second Edition or just Windows 98? Windows 98 SE fixes lots of errors and bugs in Windows 98 Standard. If you have less than 512 MB of ram, I wouldn't recommend installing Windows XP, 2000 would be a fine choice however.

(And just to throw this in as well - don't get Millenium Edition, it's chopped up pieces of Windows 95, 98 and 2000 as well as (I hear) some experimental XP stuff, since XP was released after ME, some say they tested some features out on ME. Basically it was a guinea pig and isn't very stable.)

    Thanks alot.

Just for the record, I have the second edition of windows 98.

But I do need a ram upgrade among other things.

I think an upgrade then XP is on the cards.

But thanks for your advice. Much appreciated.

Your best bet is to un-install and re-install VHE. I run 98se no probs with it, only had that error once, was just a random thing, re-install worked. If that doesn't work, try ctrl-alt-del and quit everything thats not important and see if there's a conflict. And don't worry bout the ram, i used to run it with 64mg without much trouble, just alot of lag and slow loadage.

yeah I might just do that.

the thing is Im near completion of this Halflife Deathmatch map, so i might do it afterwards.

It also takes ages to complile on my VHe, but thats due to the lack of 'modern technology' that is resting in my tower. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

What the hell?!? ME is not stable? I have it running on my PC and I am very happy with it. There are some nice features like the improvet auto completion for the run...-dialog in the start menu. The experimental stuff has never made my PC unstable and although I see that XP's version are much improved they are no buggy alpha versions, just like an older release. For those who want to get rid of all that stuff there is a nice tool called Optional Component Maker from Beta10. I used it and got 80MB of disc space back. Also the memory management seems to be a bit better than in 98, not to mention the new hardware support.
What it lacks is the boot option for MS-DOS, but if someone says WinME could as well be 98 Third Edition, that is true. If my soundcard would work on Win2000 I would use that. I have only heard good about it.
/me likes WinMe and is sure that it is more stable than Win98 in any way. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo-->

EDIT: What does Scandisk say? Any bad sectors? Wrong entries in the FAT?

I run fine with less than 512mb Ram on XP, quicker and using less resources than with 98SE + 2k.
