screen resolution
After I rebuilt my computer a month ago I just pulled grand theft auto 3 of the shelf and started playing it, It runs really nice on my machine, but I can't get the resolution over 640x480. I got a Fx5200, the latest display drivers, and the game is patched, but it doesn't want to go over 640x480.
Any guesses?

Are you trying to set the resolution over 640x480? When is it failing? HOW is it failing? So far, you've given the approximate amount of information relating to 'I have a machine and a video card, and game X doesn't work like I want it to'.

But just doing the Tech Abuse thing, I'd say that you have a budget video card that shouldn't be expected to perform much better than a GF2MX, if you can SET the resolution higher and it's just slow.

Talesin, I'm going to guess that by fx5200 he means a Geforce FX5200...

In the video options menu, I click it to a higher ressolution, like 800x600 or anything. I leave the menu, I go back into video options, and it's back at 640x480. And no, im not hitting cancel.

    edit: yea a geforce

I don't know if you have this problem but... I had it and felt really dumb afterwards...

I bought a new monitor (LCD) and it resetted my resolution back to 640x480. I changed the resolution in-game several times but nothing happened. Then I remembered that you have to actually change the resolution (using left-right arrow keys) and then pressing the ENTER key. Voila, it changed.

Now if you don't have this problem, I just got out really stupid, huh?

Yes, I realized that it was a GeForce. The problem is, the FX5200 is an extreme budget-part, which could be having an effect upon performance.

Im also having nvidia card/detonator problem. Whenever I have to switch to 640x480 or 800x600 (going to NS menu) the screen becomes offcentered. Whats even worse is that when I get in-game it stays that way.

It took me a while how to change the res in GTA3. I just used the scroll wheel and clicked it. Voila!

Silly: Recalibrate your screen for the alternate resolutions. Quite a few monitors are not 'smart' enough to use your default setting as the one you do for other res modes... the bright side is, once you switch to those modes most ARE smart enough to remember to keep that calibration for that given resolution, and not lose the old one.

(In other words, use the VCenter/HCenter and VSize/HSize buttons/menu options to make it on-center for 800x600 and 640x480)

This is why video card companies are ****. Make one card for each version of directX at one flat price and give a gaurenteed amount of performance for said DX verison

PS: I hate you nVidia and ATI.
