3rd Country In Space

DreadDread Join Date: 2002-07-24 Member: 993Members

taikonauts?
So it seems that 3rd country in space right after Russia/former USSR and USA is China, which has now its first man in space. Interesting name selection; taikonaut. Sounds funny but it fits pretty well among cosmonauts and astronauts, seeing taiko means space(or so I've heard).

What's your opinion? Is China going to do a lot of space flights in near future?

My opinion is that it's a shameless publicity stunt, and very effective if I might add. China is growing economically and probably is going to be highly involved in conquering the final frontier.

China: Aha! This will prove our greatness.
    Everyone Else: ... kay.

China is suffering from a self esteem problem. They know their country is in rough shape. They're searching for ways to look better. Any recognition China gets on the world wide stage feeds the county's general ego, even if the rest of the world doesn't really care.

You got it right pretty well. China is in bad shape but stunts like this make wonders to chinese national self esteem. And you gotta give them credit for getting that far anyway. They got bronze.

I think since it was under the direct control of the chinese millitary there would be more to it than wanting to 'show off'...

there was talk of space being the new 'higher ground' in terms of the millitary that is...

who knows, maybe china will end up being a viable opponent to the evil american empire

Maybe? In a non-nuclear war the chinese would simply give our troops trucks to run each other over with.

Because in the Chinese language, the pronouciation "taiko" means outer space. Whatever their intentions may be, I wish them a safe journey and return.

Oh c'mon guys. They made it into space! That's cool. It is kind of foolish to fund a space program when your country is in bad shape, but hey they beat you Europeans!

China really isn't doing badly. In fact, they're doing bloody well. The Special Economic Zones (SEZ) initiated under Deng Xiaping have led to a massive increase in foreign investment over the past 20+ years, and coupled with the gradual phase-out of collectivised agriculture and State Owned Enterprises (SOE) the country is recording excellent economic growth. China is less communist every day; capitalism is spreading through China quite rapidly. Direct competition to SOEs has been allowed for some time now which has led to a boom in smaller buisnesses that have been able to either force the SOEs out of buisiness or force them to become more compeditive.

The country has a ways to go yet, but it's certainly on the fast-track towards becoming one of the most powerful economic powers in the world.

With regards to the Chinese space mission, I say "Good on them". Maybe they will be the ones to land again on the Moon or to land on Mars for the first time. The scientific possibilities are breathtaking, and if the Chinese are the only ones willing to do it, I say go for it.

If the chinese are in space...my dreams of a Chinese/Japanese world empire will be soon realized (too much Rise of Nations playing only as the Chinese and allying with the Japanese and then ruling the world with them)
