I am freaking out
You probably already know I'm a pretty major Cubs fan, if you've ever followed these forums. They start their big NLCS tonight against the Marlins (The who? Didn't they get contracted last year for having like 8 fans show per game?), and I am of course freaking the hell out. For those not up on Cubs lore, I present some interesting statistics of what has occured since the last time the Cubs won a World Series, 95 years ago:

We've had 17 presidents (Teddy Roosevelt was the incumbent at the time).

The Panama Canal was built (1914) as well as given over to Panama (1999)

The US has been in two World Wars, two southeast asian conflicts, and two mideast asian conflicts.

There has been the Great Depression.

There have been 12 Amendments to The Constitution.

5 US states were added.

My grandparents, parents, myself, and my cousin's kids were all born (that's four generations).

And worst of all...

The Yankees have won 26 World Series (/me shakes fist!)

Go Cubs!

Here's hoping the Cubs go to the series. The last time the Sox won the series was in 1918, and we beat the Cubs. Should they beat the Marlins, it would be a good omen indeed.

    Baseball of course.

Baseball. We're talking about the pennant race and who's going to the world series. MonsieurEvil wants the Chicago Cubs to win the National League playoffs and I want the Boston Red Sox to win the American League playoffs, so we can see a Cubs-Sox game for the series.

Actually, it's simply "damned Nem". I couldn't even name the four best German soccer teams without of consulting Google...

Anyway, thanks for the answers. Is there a video stream of the games somewhere? HunTV doesn't cover anything with bats.

I keep forgetting your pop's from New England. Tell him hi from a Cub's fan in the states, and that I watched the Sox-Oakland game last night just as on the edge of my seat as game 5 of the Cubs NLDS win. Derrick Lowe is awesome, and I even forgive Manny Ramirez for being an egomaniac after that crushed 3 run homer. All my Boston and Chicago buddies and I are going out to watch the BoSox and Cubs game Wednesday. Rawk!

Though I'm a Cards fan and hate the Cubs (take that Monse ), I seriously doubt the Marlins have any chance of winning the series. It looks like the Cubs will be returning to the World Series for the first time since 1945. But, I still think it'll be an AL victory as the Yankees and the BoSox are both incredible teams and the AL has home field this year if I'm not mistaken.

Ahhhhhhh, but Cubs pitching is phenomenal. I think after the Marlins are brushed aside (/me makes offering to the baseball gods), the Cubs have a great shot at shutting down either the Sox or Yanks. In interleague play we swept the Yankees this year and made it look easy. There is no one in the AL thast puts a Prior, Wood, Zambrano triple-pitch punchout up like the cubs. They practically unhittable - it's like the 2001 D-Backs; remember them, that team that beat the Yankees and won the World Series?

The Cubs are like the Borg - they assimilate everyone, and they always lose in the end.

It sure was weird to see Pro-Play Stadium full, and have it not be a Dolphins game. Hopefully the Marlins can keep it going with their fairweather (litterally!) fans this time after the year is over.

Yes, I to like the Cubs. But the Red Sox are my team of choice.

Non the less, Al Bundy was a huge cubs fan, same with my Gov Teacher. =)

Marlins fan here and just saw this thread. Been a fan since day one in 1993 but of course it's been up and down baseball town here. The Miami and Ft. Lauderdale area just care about one thing and that is the Dolphins. Not even the Panthers(hockey) get that many fans because their is just to much to do in this area. But when the Marlins show up the whole freaking state shows up. What do you expect when you're owner sold off the team he bought to win the World Series and then expects people to support the team when he just took his money and ran. :/ This one is far from bought and is a bunch of talented no-namers except for Ivan Rodriguez which has been Mr. Clutch in the post season and thank god for that.

I was at a bar watching the game and boy what a game. I'm glad people see this Marlin's team as a bunch of loser's because if anything they have proven their not. If you still keep thinking they have no chance it'll just come back to haunt you're team. (Look at the Giants.) Both teams have great pitching and it'll be about bullpens as tonight's game showed. And Sammy coming out of his dry spell and finally making an impact. Of course I want my Marlins to win, I just hope all the games are as nail-biting as this one. Really does wonders for baseball.

    GOOOOO MARLINS!!!

BTW.....the Cubs are the favorites in this series according to ESPN so that can't be good for the Cubs. Also, poor Michael Wilbon(HUGE CUBS FAN!!!) from PTI, I'm sure he can't believe his cubbies lost like the rest of Chicago.

You know what is funny. The "World" series has always been won by the Americans (GG Eddie Izzard)

Just poking fun, its a Brit thing.

I've been a Cubs fan almost as long as I've been a Sox fan (White of course you wankers). I've been to Wrigley several times, Old Comiskey several times and New Comiskey once. I cried the day they started demolishing Old Comiskey. I'm 20 years old and haven't lived in Chicago in 10 years. I remember when Sosa was a no-talent wanker that played right field for the Sox...I disliked him then, dislike him now, but I still love my Cubbies. Hell, I like the Cubs better than I like the Astros (was born in Houston, lived here till I was three, came back when I was 10) Nothin quite like bein in the bleachers and watchin a ball go sailing into Waveland (sp?) avenue aned into somebody's window/windshield

What Eddie doesn't understand is that many players in Major League baseball are not Americans. In fact, it's barely 50% Americans. This is because Eddie Izzard is a nitwit comedian. Just poking fun, it's a facts thing.

I was pretty sad last night, but I'm getting it together. Now that I've thought on it, the Marlins were just barely able to beat us even though they had their very best starting pitcher (Beckett) against the absolute worst Cubs postseason starting pitcher (Zambrano). And Beckett got shelled worse than Normandy Beach. So I am feeling confident for the next 2 games at least. Next up, Mark Prior, future hall of famer, and Sammy's now rejuevnated bat.

Let's not forget that the underdog Twins beat the Yankees in game one in a huge upset. They then crumbled and lost every single game afterwards. Let us hope that history repeats itself, for MonsE's and other Cubs fans' sake.

And my wife is beginning to get very, very mad that the Cubs made the postseason and that there could be as many as 13 more games. Little does she know that if the Cubs had been eliminated by now, I'd just be watching Hockey and Football instead.

I could kidnap the Marlin pitcher's son ala Robert Dinero in The Fan and then threaten to kill him if he strikes anyone out.

Speaking of Hockey I'm really torn about the Kings this season, I mean I've been rooting for them for about 7 years straight now and they have been some rough years...but this season they traded a bunch of players again and Luc came back when he shouldn't have even been traded in the first place, it's just getting frustrating.
  • MonsieurEvilMonsieurEvil Join Date: 2002-01-22 Member: 4Members, Retired Developer, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
I thought the NHL might actually be on its way out this year with the threat of a lockout, non-existent fan bases, too many small-market expansion teams, and just not enough interest from most Americans. It has always struck me as a big market-only (aka Chicago, NY, Boston, Canada) league that needed to watch its bottom line. For gosh sakes, they were passed up by NASCAR for popularity and TV ratings last year - how low can you go? This could be the last decade of the NHL I think...

As for the Kings... they need to get serious. The last time they made a good player buy decision was grabbing the Great One and that was a long time ago. Since then it's been pretty mediocre. Seems like they have become a tax shelter for the owners...
