Light Box Help

<div class="IPBDescription">Animation!!!</div> Does anybody know where I can buy/order a light box <b>in the UK</b>?

I would like one but they're hard to find, also very expensive. I would like a beginner type one. I think it has to be 12F (in-between A4 and A3?)

I also don't know the difference between ACME peg bars and round peg bars. I'll have to find out what my university use, so I can get the same one. But is there some major difference so I might be able to tell? The ones we use look like: - o -

Thanks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    ACME peg bars are the - o - kind. These are extensible as well, when working with large sheets of celluloid.

    Don't know where to buy that kind of supply in the UK, but Cartoon Color out here in California does ship worldwide. I bought a slimline ACME strip from them so I could scan, and a standard profile for my lightbox to do onionskin.

    If you need a name for lightboxes though, go for a Gagne. They're great, stay cool, and have an even redistribution. As well, they have selectable illumination levels... so if you're working on thinner media, you can switch it to level 1 by only turning on one of the switches. Standard, hit the level 2 switch. If you're working on cardstock or thicker (yes, even super-heavyweight paper is boxable on these things), hit both the switches to pop up to level 3.

    Cheers Talesin. Cartooncolour have a UK branch too, I think... If I was going to buy one, I think it would be from there <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    I'm just after a cheap one for when I'm learning. I don't want to spend a lot on it if I never use it <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Thankfully I managed to find mine on sale for around $99 USD. Unfortuntely, a jerk gave it a whack, tweaking the frame slightly and making it so the support legs won't lay flat any more. :b Still works just fine though

    They are American. I don't mind ordering it if shipping is cheap enough.

    Are <a href='http://www.cartooncolour.com/cart/category.asp?category=light_boxes' target='_blank'>these</a> the ones you recommend?

    Edit:

    I was looking at these:

    No, though the wedge-shaped ones are good for casual sketching. The Port-a-Trace is a Gagne product, but the ones on Cartoon Colour have te pegstrip integrated flush, rather than sitting on the plexi. Sitting on the plexi is a pain, if you have a standard plastic strip, and prefer to work to the edges of a large registration marker.

    So are you saying the ones on cartoon colour are good? <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> Is that bad because it gives a lip where the peg is?

    I'm a novice at this sort of thing, I would like one and I'm slowly learning what the light box needs.

    Thanks a lot, again <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    The ones on cartoon colour are good. They're flushmount, meaning the pegstrip is inset into the plexi, making for a flat surface all the way to the holes so you can more easily overdraw. Their only down-side is that they are not disc-mounted, which tends to get annoying after a little while, if you're used to drawing with a tilted page instead of flat-on. The CC ones are also single-piece, so they're a lot more durable if they're going to take bangs. I'd say that if you're just getting started, get one of the white wedge ones from CC, and use that. Be warned that it may not be as bright or deliver *as* even light as a higher end box (Gagnes are used in hospitals for reading X-rays) but it will suit your purpose as a 'learner' if you don't feel like making your own, or lack the time/ability to put one together.
