    Well, I'd say that either your monitor isn't adjusted properly on the vertical, or that your system is right. It looks like your video card went *ping*. Probably the RAMDAC, or one of the bridging capacitors. Why I never go for a third-party manufacturer when getting a video card... a lot of them go substandard on the bridging caps, to save a few pennies. Meaning degraded visual quality, and increased likelihood of failure.

    well, ur first problem wod happen if u made the screen stretch too far in wideness (using the monitor's settings)

    the second i just recently experienced myself, wat u have to do is reinstall the drivers for the video card and then change the resolution to 1024x768 or sumtin that ur monitor supports (my card defualted to 640x480 but my monitor dint support that)

    yeh and then make sure it lists ur card as a a geforce 3 ti 500 under "display adaptors" instead of a "video adapter" under "unknown" in device manager (right click my computer -> hardware -> device manager).

    Hope that helps,
    Cheers

    EDIT: Install drivers via nvidia's driver installation program (preferebly the one's suplied with ur card) and then change ur resolution a couple of times. Ur video card should now be listed as a geforce 3 and u wont get problems after u restart.

    i uninstalled every peace of software rel;ated to my video card, AMD AGP drivers, nividia geforec drivers and even the platfoem drivers for my motherbord. but nothing has changed,

    when ever i restart, it asles to install a video controler(VGA compatible) it then says it cannot find the nessesary dirvers.

    any way i hope it's my video card cuse i'm getting a new geforce FX 5600 next thursday. if the problem still exists i'll reintsll windows, and if worst comes to worst reformat (the answer to all problems)

    I could be wrong but since you said you took a screen of your desktop but the pic looked fine I think it may be your moniter and nothing to do with your operating system. I realy doubt this problem has anything to do with the "software" parts of your computer (i.e. your driver, windows, etc.) but rather your hardware has prolly suffered some psychical harm. I know on my lap-top the joint of the whole thing (where you open it) got damaged and my screen started showing messed up colors and other wacko stuff, I had to send it back to the manufacturer to get it fixed.

    here we go
    <img src='http://www.bellenfant.com/~bodkin/ss.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image'>

    i'll have to switch out monitors to narrow it down. so far i think a video controler is accual hardware on the video card

    i also took a risk and started up HL i was able to play it only in software mode but it could go up to 1024*800 with out any of vertical lines showing up

    Looks like a monitor or monitor cable needs replacing, that or your video card drivers are fuxored..
