Somehow, I'm not sure, but he has been branded by demons, and is tormented by them, he has a sense to feel when they are around (burning of the brand), and it gained supernatural strength by it, I believe.
Gatsu is a member of a Mercenary group.

First off I need to explain the Berserk timeline.
Currently the manga stands at 25 Volumes
The Anime series takes place between Volume 1 and Volume 13 of the manga. (Though a crapload of stuff gets left out)
Volumes 1-13 revolve around Gatsu's time in the Band of the Hawk and ends at the 'Festival'
Volumes 14 and above deal with Gatsu and his revenge....
The Band of the Hawk basically are a Mercenary group for hire... they do the jobs too tough or insane for any other group to attempt.... Interesting storylines, and doesn't hold back on the violence.
Sirus is also more or less correct... I don't want to give too much away cause it's a good series.
Oh and if you wonder why it ends so suddenly at Ep25.... well... The manga continues from where the anime leaves off....
Also. The manga has extra characters, ten times as much violence, extra stories, doesn't hold back on stuff like rape (Hey, it's set in medieval times...) and overall is sooooooooooooo much better than the anime it's not funny....
Rumours are rising of a 2nd Berserk series in production. Which will undoubtedly suck because they're not allowed to make it as violent as the 1st series >_<

I mean, of course it was awesome and worthwhile....but seeing the incredibly annoying theme song over twenty times in one sitting is a little.....unnerving.
In conclusion, if you're gonna watch the anime, don't do it all at once - You won't know Gatsu from Casca towards the end. Trust me <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

by the end of it we were both hallucinating ^^;

Berserk is a cool anime though, too bad I can't get it.
But I'd have to say the most memerable one-sitting would have to have been when I read all of Akira (on my comp) in one sitting. I had flesh-baby dreams for days.
