<div class="IPBDescription">Stacked up against the rest</div> Ignore other sites, the only place to go is the master: <a href='http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030923/index.html' target='_blank'>http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030923/index.html</a>

A very detailed and complete read. It comes down to how much you want to pay - get a slighty faster 32-bit performance with a P4 EE (a rebranded Xeon, basically), or use a new 64/32-bit Athlon offering that is offering quite a punch for the price.

    To me all that means is processor prices which I can actually afford are going to drop. Bleeding edge stuff is for people who are loaded with cash.

    Um, what is the price of the Athlon? I found the article a bit heavy on technical stuff (I'll get one of my computer savvy housemates to go through it), which isn't being critical, I'd just like to know what the price differance is. Currently I'm running a 2100XP and loving it so if an Athlon can approach a P4 in performance and still remain low cost then I'll defenitly consider it.

    If technology is so "cheap" why am I paying an arm and a leg for it. I'll care more about this when it becomes feasible for my own use.

    Exactly what I'm thinking as I sit here waiting for my 766 celeron to creak its way through a <i>really</i> straightforward render...

    Reduce all those prices by $200 at least, since you're obviously going with a 9800 Pro...

    ...not an FX5900. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    Well all that made me want is to buy one of those cool remote control cars in the form of a motherboard with components <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

    One of the things I dislike about hardware sites nowadays is they focus less and less on helping you make an informed purchase decision, and instead focus 20 pages on understanding how the thing is built and works from the ground up without giving any useful information to people who don't are to read the process flowcharts of the thing...

    Agreed Doom, they are a tad "jargon heavy" I find..

    A more helpful rating system ( alongside all the techspecs, naturally ) might be..

    "If you want to play games, buy this."
    "Doing a lot of hugely complex equations? buy this."
    "Playing Solitaire and typing letters? Buy anything."

    I enjoyed the website with the fps / $ graph for the HL2 specs, now <i>that's</i> helpful.. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

    those prossesors make me drool. but i can still wait till they drop to a more consumer friendly price. i'll probably get one in 4 or 5 years, unless they have a 128 bit chip and i become wealthy at that time.

    if only plasma screens would drop at a faster price.

    I can't wait until computer technology gets so sophisticated that people won't have to upgrade anymore. Games will have enough power and whatnot for them to run. Hopefully by then I will still be alive. I could imagine games that are played so realistically, that you could actually control every aspect of your character, like peeing and eating icecream. There would be two square boxes infront of you, your hands would be inserted in these compartments and the computer would scan your hand movements. No more mouses and keyboards, just plain ol' fun.

    It exists already in demo form, they call it "outside", unfortunately while the graphics are amazing, once you get past the first few levels the gameplay really sucks.
